Rossi in .223 shoot Wolf/Silver Bear/Brown Bear ammo?
« on: February 21, 2010, 11:29:11 AM »
Hey guys, I took Rossi #5 tot he range today and was gonna "try her" and expecte the Wolf to NOT ignite well and have an issue firing.

I have tried to shoot 7.62x39 Military and its pretty tough to get em to go.  Wolf, S&B, Yugo Milsurp, Albanian Milsurp etc....all have some issues.  My .308 has a HICCUP shooting any Milsurp .308...Mainly S&B......so I ASSUMED the .223 would not be a steel cased ammo shooter ;)

I brought a couple .223 and a box of Wolf.  I put in the first steel cased wolf and "boom"....Huh?  I was surprised but het luck is luck.....2nd...BOOM, 3rd, ditto....4th, 5th.

I shot 5 in a row and not even a 2nd tap needed.  Did Rossi put in a stronger spring?  WAIT... This specific rifle is a Combo....Is the spring stronger as it needs to light the 20 Gauge as well???

Whats your experience here.  I recall reading the .223 had issues as well.....maybe the combos do not??

PLease post experience good or bad.

P.S.  With iron sites and the youth stock and not trying....I was able to be M.O.T. (minute of Toaster) Someone left it behind and only hit it twice...I did better than they did (well at 50 yds anyway)

If it can't pop a S&B primer, something may be wrong. they are pretty
soft.

S.S.  The S&B in this instance was the 1970's era .308 in the green box.  Berdan primed surplus.  So it is NOT the new S&B ammo (which I agree is very nice)

I should have been more thorough in my post....

I appreciate the input!  Great point.

I have the Rossi Varmint Master in .223 and it has never failed to pop any Wolf, Brown Bear, etc...  From cheap to high quality, it has popped every round I put through it. On a side note, I have had Remington ammo misfire in other guns. Like... a lot. Only Remington though.

maybe it has something to do with the smaller primer?

Yeah, I wasn't sure why it worked so easily.  I'm good with it!!!!  I did get a set of loading dies and have all the other stuff here to start loading some plinkers.  I will drop on a little scope and be ready to go with Wolf and other steel cased and also crank up some loads to see how well I can get it to zing!

Excited to give her a go late rthis summer.  A fun little toy snapper of a rifle......my first .223.  Kind of Anemic huh?  Not saying I'd like to get shot with it but after my usual 8mm or .06 etc the .223 just seems puny????

Yeah it seems puny, but let me tell you it is deadly. I have killed quite a few 250 pound hogs with my Rossi 223. It loves 55 grain bullets.

I thank God everyday for my loving wife and all the fond memories of hunting with my Papa from a child until now.

Please take time to take a kid hunting, it will be a life long memory and blessing for both of you!

It's not uncommon in the AR community for guys to have a .223 upper and one in 7.62x39.  They usually find themselves having to install a stronger hammer spring to fire milsurp 7.62x39 because the primers for them are extremely hard.  The .223 not so much.  They're just standard Wolf primers.

While I have admitedly not had a 223 Rossi, I have had several 223 Handi rifles and the few boxes of Wolf I did try all went off, but they were dirty and not very accurate. Once you get into reloading for it I doubt you will look back at Wolf Steel case ammo very often for your 223... just a hunch. I am sure you will have a lot of fun with it, it's a fun caliber and pretty easy to reload for as componets are every where.
