Debating on a purchase
« on: February 15, 2010, 05:55:09 PM »
I have the opportunity to purchase a 1974 H&R Single Shot 12g.. with what appears to be a 28" barrel for only $85.

I really can't decide if I should or not, because with how old it is... I can't get any additional barrels or really do anything to this gun can I?
He said it works just fine, just older. If I was able to put a rifled slug barrel on it I wouldn't hesitate at all, but only having the one long barrel.. I can't decide. Does anyone own a pre-87 H&R have any suggestions or opinion on this for me? Is there ANYTHING I can really do to change this gun? (aside from stock and forearm) Were there additional barrels floating around for it that could be fit to it. (obviously not by H&R but on my own)
Picture shown below. Thanks for your opinions in advance.

A brand spanking new Pardner doesn't cost much more. they sell regularly for $120, often on sale for $100, you can have 357mag, 44mag as well as a 20gr USH or 12ga Tracker II barrel installed on it, as well as all the other regular shotgun barrels, something else to consider, used Pardners sell for $50-$75 also.  ;)

Hate to highjack, but are you saying that 357-44 mag can be fitted to a sb1 frame?

Yes, they've been fitting them to SB1s for two years now, the 357 and 44 mags only come on SB1 frames, have since Jan 2008.

Wow, I didn't realize they were running that cheap! I thank you for your infinite knowledge yet again sir! I will definitely pass this up then in light of that information. It is nice being able to check with folks much more knowledgeable than myself on these matters so I do not make a purchase and later face buyers-remorse.

Thank ya,

I sold several new SB1a for $65, and could not get more. I bought one with slug barrel on Auction arms for $45 plus shipping.

Offer him 1/2 of what he is asking for it and tell him, you can get a brand new one for between 100-120 and will be able to put additional bbls on the it. If he wont go that low your not out aynthing if he says yes your only out 45 bucks and can still get a new one and add bbls.

Personally I would just buy a new one. That way you can get other barrels for it including 357 and 44. You will also know what has and hasn't been done to the gun.

I bought a older Model 88 12 ga 30" full choke a while back for $65. It works great.
I enjoy shootin it and I plan on keeping it just the way it is. I just like the simplicity
of it. See if you can talk the guy down some on the price.

I would make a low ball offer. If he accepts you have a good 12ga if you need one.  :)

I bought a mint used SB1 (12ga 3" 28" mod) last year from a very knowledgeable shotgunner for $70.  No haggling.  I just asked what he considered a fair price.

I bought 2 12 ga Pardners a while back, $110 for the pair.  Both were 28'' mod, and a bit rough around the edges, but they both shoot well and work like they should.  Kept one, gave one to my son for his birthday.
