If you think gymnastic training in the US is any better then you are way off!  Yes there were a couple of instances in that film where the instructor went too far, but if you think that US instructors don't take it too far some times then you have never been in a Gym.  In a sport where body strength is crucial, the training is intense and sometimes borderline abusive.  It is the nature of the sport and competition period.  Paint the Chinese any way you want. There are many of valid reasons for animosity toward them, but rigorous training of world class athletes isn't one of them.

Heather is right, I was in Gymnastics, and with all my training, I wasn't good enough to go Varsity in High School...it takes lots of time, dedication, sweat and pain to achieve the level of the degree these people compete at. So, yes, they should get some cheese with their whine!

In a free-choice system I don't have a problem with rigorous training.  If you never had your head snatched off by a football coach or weren't ever made to run hills or laps for missing a grounder then you don't understand.  Almost EVERY high school wrestling program is abusive in one way or another, but the kids CHOOSE to be there.  When they don't have a choice (not so sure about the Chinese Olympic program) is when it is bad.
