SuperWeld
« on: February 21, 2010, 04:42:26 AM »
Just a brief report on using Goop SuperWeld for barrel fitting:  I thought I had my topper 158 30-30 barrel all nicely fitted on one of my SB2 frames when I noticed that one side of the receiver contour shelf (if you have one of these, you know what I am talking about), was sitting a little higher than the opposite side.  Really only a mm or two, and I probably could have left it alone - but you know how that is.  Anyway, I knew it was probably not an angled hinge pin - because I had no such problem with the factory-mounted barrel.  I decided to try to correct this by removing some material from the top of the hinge pin recess on the lug on the high side...this of course, loosened things back up.

Goop SuperWeld to the rescue:  Everything is now tight again (< 0.001 headspace).  One warning about the SuperWeld - the package states a 20-minute working time - but to get any benefit in terms of the Goop filling out the recess to make everything square, you need enough resistance so that everything doesn't just squirt out every which way when you lock up the action.  I had to wait...and wait...and wait until the actual cure time was mostly up - 2 hrs. to be exact (cure time is 2.5 hours for 1/8 inch thickness).  You might not want to wait quite that long, because it took some pretty forceful closing to get the hardening SuperWeld to take on the proper shape.  At any rate - it takes a while, and you have to watch it.  Goop has at least 3 other Superwhatevers - and they all have the 36,000 psi compressive strength, but 2 of them have cure times of only 20-minutes.  The nice thing about the SuperWeld is that it is "metallized" and once it does cure, it makes a very solid and smooth surfaced filler.

Did you need to put any type of "release agent" on the hinge pin?  DP

I used a pretty heavy application of lithium grease straight from the can.  Worked just fine - and good for metal in the long run.

Fred used it to repair his 257 Roberts Ultra, he's very happy with the results so far, I've never used it without a shim myself.

Tim

I agree with Tim, that Superweld 2 by Goop is really good I applied it without a shim to close a 0.005" gap and so far it has not moved. Super accuracy was restored. Don't know how long it will last, but it is so easy to use and sets up to 36000psi in a day.
It is better than the Devcon Steel putty I have used before.

There are no Handi's that have that much back thrust on the hinge pin, me thinks?
