2.5 Millitary Truck
« on: February 24, 2010, 02:19:02 PM »
I'm thinking of bidding on a 6x6 duece and half next week with the 465 straight six multi-fuel with a multi-speed transfer case.  I've seen them run around $2300-1300 at our local base.  They have about 10 to 20k on them with 1500 hours or so.  Has anybody ever purchase one at auction?  I think it may come in handy on our farm.  How temperamental are these engines. I've heard they will run on almost anything even waste oil.

If they haven't changed the military used to get rid of the vehicles that they had to spend the most money on to keep running. Kinda stupid but it is a government operation. The multi fuel will run on most anything flammable, gas, oil ,diesel, alcohol, perfume, of course the better the fuel the better the power. mileage is not a word in its vocabulary.
the nation that forgets it defenders will itself be forgotten

Put a lot of miles on M35 Series 2.5T Army trucks, mostly M109 version (shop van on back).  They are considered multi-fuel but that is for worst case situations.  Use JP8 or Diesel 2, a little mogas in the winter keeps DF from jelling and they run a little warmer.  Fuel mileage really isn't that bad, make sure it has the clean air kit (turbo kit).  Oh, top speed of 60 mph going down hill (semi-steep) with a tail wind and no load.

No power steering, you will have a strong upper body in short order.  Loose the military tires, get civilian type mud/snow tires.  You will be doing a front and rear main seal at least yearly, no fun.  Hydravac and booster go out pretty regularly and you know what happens then.

The 900 Series 5T is so much better.  Strong Cummins engine, 5 spd Alison auto trans, power steering, they will run down the road 60 and a little better all day on fairly level roads.  There are shelters that mount right in the bed with a mounting kit (turn buckles) that have ECUs built in.  Only bad thing is that most of the shelters need 208 3 phase electricity to power up.

To me, the best use would be by someone with a lot of rough land where 6X6 would come in handy.

Good luck with it if you get one.  Oh, by the way, your picture is a 5T not the 2.5T.
