Barrel Fit Question
« on: February 19, 2010, 12:12:12 AM »
I checked the FAQ's and didn't find exactly what I was looking for.  I have a 44mag barrel purchased off another forum member here, that I am trying to get fitted to my frame.  It locks up tight, no visible gap, and the latch engagement seems correct per the FAQ's.  However there is a slight side to side play in it.  I checked the factory fitted 45/70 barrel and there is know play at all.  What can a do to take the play out, or should I not worry about it?

Thanks

However there is a slight side to side play in it.

If that's when the action is closed, it's not fitted good and needs to be shimmed, if only when the action is open, it doesn't matter.

Quick,

When I was getting a little play, I did not have the forend installed.  I just had it out this morning and this time I installed the forend, there is absolutely no play at all.  I even got out a peice of aluminum foil and it locked up tight on the foil.  It took some effort to pull it out.  I doubled the foil over and it took considerable effort to get it out, one corner ripped a little.  Does this sound like it is fitted tight?  My latch engagement is still good per the FAQs.

Thanks

If there's any looseness with the action closed it likely won't be as accurate as it will be if properly fitted, the forend will hide a loose barrel, it just depends if the barrel locks up in the same position each time the action is closed. Shoot it and see how it does.
