shopping for a Contender...

I seem to be [once more] getting Contender fever again. I have owned several frames and a dozen or more barrels. The last was sold about 5 years ago. Now a local has a G2 for sale in 30/30Imp 14" barrel. He wants $525 for gun, Simmons scope,holster and die set. I have not shopped prices in years.
Can you guys tell me what the Contender/G2's pricing is these days? Used, new, whatever, just so I can get an idea of the 'going prices'.

I am going to meet the owner of this G2 in a day or so. I've had the 30/30 Ackley Improved before in rifles and am very experienced with just over 40 years of reloading experience and 10 years of rebarreling [bolt rifles, not Contenders] experience.
All I know that I'll need for THIS Contender is a GOOD set of hearing protectors!!!!

That would be a good price for the rig. Is the barrel a T/C or aftermarket? If it is a good aftermarket barrel it is really a good deal.

      Love that 14" 30/30AI and of course you already know about it and I think you'll really like it in a Contender.  Not too excited about the Simmons unless it be one of the old 2-7X Gold Medal models....tuff as nails.  Price depends on what the scope is worth...seems a little high but that may be cause I've not warmed up to the G-2 yet.

With all that stuff $525 is fair. Its a nice combo. In CA it would bring more. In AZ or TX, less.

New G2 in my area are 500.00 so when you add the scope rings base holster and dies all plus tax that seems like a fair price.

Here in CA I think I paid $525 plus tax and title for my 14" 223 with a scope two or three years ago.  Mine was frame, wood, barrel and adjustable 1.5-4 Burris scope only no additional stuff.
So I say good deal and if it is what you want.

Comes down to opinion, mine depends on what things are.   Frame would be worth more to me if it was a Contender Easy Open.   For the barrel, a lot depends on if it is a rechambered factory barrel or a 3rd party custom barrel.   Big dif in value there.   How much has it been shot?   As Walt suggested, unless the scope is the Gold Medal model, it would add zero value to the package to me as I'd just throw it away anyway.   What brand dies makes a price dif.    Holster doesn't add much, and again depends on what holster even then.   So unless it's a custom barrel and/or GM scope, I'd say the price is on the high side for used.

I found out it's a factory 30/30 that 'someone' reamed to AI. I've chambered enough barrels to be very suspect of a 3rd party's chamber job. I have use of a HawkEye borescope and could use it but I've decided I'm going to keep looking. I've found 'deals' before and maybe I can again.

I hear you on the 3rd party rechamber.  I have a 7-30 rechamber on a 7TCU barrel that is .010 too deep.  I got case head separations at first.  I can size my brass up to it and make it work, but I'll never be able to sell it in good conscience.  It was a good deal at a gun show so, oh well.

Why is Texas and Arizona cheaper?

I use $200 for frames as a base.  My buddy uses $250.  Easy open preferred.  Non easy, a little less.  I'll use $125 for base barrels with desirable ones more.  FTF to save shipping.

That makes a $350 gun with furniture a fair price.  Scopes and rings are valued by brand name.

I bought a like-new Contender, easy open, 10" .357 Mag Factory Barrel with wood on Tuesday for $378.  Fair deal, I wanted a .357 barrel.  They normally get close to $400 + tax for Contenders.  Another shop has an 8" 44 Mag, pre easy listed for $600.  2 months and counting.

I've also been accused of being cheap.
