Anybody using .22 Short?
« on: December 24, 2009, 01:08:42 PM »
It's a cartridge that's seldom used today, but some do use it. What's your application for shortie? I've always thought Olympic rapid fire pistol was cool.

I shoot them in my High Standard, High Sierra revolver. They seem to be much more quite than LRs and Mags.

JWP58,
How do you like your High Sierra?
I have one also, and I love it.
I haven't ever fired any shorts through it though.l
I do have a friend who lives in a small town that uses shorts to control the squirrel population in his back yard.
The neighbors don't complain about his squirrel hunting, when they don't hear him shooting.

Back to the High Sierra, here's a pic.

When I shoot shorts out of my M39 Marlin you can hear the hammer fall and that's about all. The bullet strike is usually louder than the report of the rifle.

I shoot Beaver during pest control work.  My partner uses a Marlin .22 lever action .22rf, using .22 Shorts.  He limits his shots for the back of the head.

I shoot them and CCI CB shorts in both my 1906 H&R and in my Davis Derringer.
The'06 is a .22 B/P gun and the pressures are low with a 29 grain Short and the Derringer extract'st he short or CB cap easilly.
 Both are fun/last resort Pistols.

I used to have a couple guns that would shoot the little 22 short.
Got rid of them when they came up short on a task.
Kind of wish I had held on to them.
They were a lot of fun to plink in the backyard with.

I keep a few shorts around, and mostly shoot them in my old Woodsman.  But lately i've been shooting Remington CBee 22's, and i like them even better.  They have less power than a short, but are quieter, and have a better bullet design.

I like to hunt tree rats with them in my Rem 552 , they don't pay much attention to the report and I can get my limit sitting in one place, I also have a RG revolver chambered for 22 short only, got it for $7.50 ordered from the back of a Field and Stream magazine when I was about 14. terrible , couldn't hit a barn from the inside. ;D

:) Howdy! I use .22 Short now and then. They are really good for plinking, etc. I had an uncle who used .22 Short exclusively to hunt squirrel. He always came home with a bunch of them. He had a single shot .22 rifle.

I'd like to but they are too expensive.

The shorts do cost more than long rifle, but you don't just plink with them. It's a special purpose round so you don't shoot that many.  ;D

If you need quiet then shorts or cb caps are worth the little extra money in my opinion. I always keep a box or two around along with a box of shot loads.
