Bolt actions and bipods

Good, I got your attention.  Since I do not see anywhere better to post this question and this is one of the most popular forums here goes.  What is the most solid/accurate way to use a detached bipod while shooting (your bolt action rifle of course) besides prone?  This would be for hunting or for target fun.  Should the bipod tilt towards the shooter?  What if you can't lean back against anything (like a tree) but you have to sit.  Would you lean forwards into the bipod or what?  I hate re-inventing the wheel so thought you avid shooters would know.  Thanks. :?

I used a Harris bipod a few years ago.  It was on a Remington BDL SS in .270, but I don't remember the model of the bipod.  I do think that it was adjustable to about a couple of feet or so.  

When I used it, I was sitting down with my back to a tree and had the legs extended to the max setting.  I was shooting slighly downhill at a hog.  It was a sturdy rest and the shot went exactly where I wanted it to go.  The only thing that I didn't like about it was that it was a little too heavy for my tastes.

Thanks for the replies, but I think the Harris bipods attach to the rifle.  How about bipods that do not attach.  Like stoneypoint etc... you know, the crotch stick style. :-)
