Bullet weight for 243 handi
« on: February 27, 2010, 12:00:31 PM »
I have a standard weight 243 barrel for my NEF Handi Rifle.  I plan on using it for coyote.  I've loaded for a lot of calibers but never 243.  The Rate of twist is 1:10.  I need to buy bullets and don't want to waste money.  I have had great luck with Sierra Games in my other rifles.  Which weight should I start with and do you have a pet load?

In my buddy's son's YHR I load 85gr Sierra BTHP and 38gr of H-4895 (please work up).  I haven't chrony'd the load but it's very accurate and has taken two deer with no trouble.

85 grain boat tails and near max load of H4831 is my pet coyote load.   About 1/2" groups at 100yds out of my Ruger model 77.

The 2 bullets that I have found to shoot best in my 243 Handi super lite are the 58g Hornady V-max and the 100g Rem RN , both do a wonderful job . The 58s for p-dogs / groundhogs / yotes and the 100s for deer . Even from that pencil thin barrel they both shoot 3/4" , 3 shot groups if I do my part .

The 58s do better with a mid-level load of Varget and the 100s like a near max load of IMR4895 .

I shot a .243 for nearly 30 years and tried lots of bullets from 75 hollow points to 100 grain Noslers. I finally shot only 100 grain bullets for everything. Nosler partitions for large game and Sierras for everything else. All with a good dose of IMR 4350.

My son's 243 Handi never shot better than 3" groups with 100grain spitzers but shot sub MOA with 85 grainers, either patitions or Sierra BTHP. All with IMR 4350.
