In another post Dale asked why our Government wants to take away our guns. My belief is it's because they want to have total control over us.
"They" certainly do, if by "they" you are referring to the progressives that infest our government at all levels. Progressives come in both Democrat (think Franklin D. Roosevelt) and Republican (think FDR's cousin Theodore) forms, but they tend to have several things in common.
One is that they ascribe to a belief that the individual is incapable of tending to his own affaris or exercising sound judgement. Another is that some people are just too stupid and backwards to function without the aid of a nanny state. Another is that the Neanderthals of society prevent said society from "progressing" or evolving. They also have an annoying tendency to look upon the U.S. Constitution with varying degrees of derision ranging from mild to wild. The Constitution is supposed to limit government's infringement on personal liberty that comes from a supreme, supernatural being. The progressive has a problem with that concept because he doesn't belive that the common man is intellegent, capable, or responsible enough to know what to do with liberty. The other reason they have a problem with that concept is because they put faith in their fellow elites and distrust anyone expressing faith in a divine supernatural being because they're obviously backwards simpletons lacking fully evolved capacity for thought.
So yes, there are those in positions of power who DO want with every fibre of their being to lord over every aspect of your workaday existance. It isn't just because they're on some "power trip," though many clearly are. Most progressives simply think that you're too stupid to function in society without Uncle Sam in the role of nanny, so they want control for your own good and the good of society as a whole. They are deluded into thinking that they are smarter, better educated, more wise, and so on than their fellow man, and it is their destiny to rule over him and your fate to submit to that rule. But it is for your own good. You're just too stupid to see it.
The point is that many of those seeking the kind of control alluded to by the quoted poster aren't seeking said control just for the sake of being in control. They're on a mission, with a broader and, in their minds, more pure and just agenda. That agenda is to put the Neanderthals in their proper places and protect them from themselves so that society as a whole can FINALLY advance to the utopian type they all fantasize about.
Fortunately, we in "Great Unwashed Masses" are NOT as stupid as the typical progressive is deceived into believing that we are.
