Favotite 41 mag handload
« on: April 05, 2010, 01:53:00 AM »
I asked earlier how many 41 fans there were out there, and learned there are quite a few. What is your favortie handload for the 41. I have shot about a zillion 212 grain cast bullets ahead of 8 grains of unique. Shtogunner

I am forever experimenting so can't really say I have a favorite. I did once.. AL8 with an unknown cast bullet of 215 or so wt. It shot really well but I'm out of AL8 and I don't think its made any more.  8-9 grains of Unique and a 210 to 235 cast bullet has been very good for a lot of shooting.

I like using full loads of H110  and jacketed for serious loads in 41 & 44.  I use 231 with cast for plinking in both.

As a young man I loaded cast bullets to around 800 fps and when ever I loaded jacketed bullets it was always at top velocity. I have learned that I do not always need all that speed, power, recoil and muzzle blast. I am now loading JHPs to moderate velocities, like 1100 fps and have learned they will do almost anything I need them to. There are some powders I have not yet tried, Power Pistol, Lil Gun and a few others. Maybe I will have time this spring to test them. Shotgunner

For full power loads I like H110 and I've messed with H4227 with 250 gr jacketed. I have played with Lil Gun but for some reason it keeps me nervous. I guess if I read more of its use in the 41, or used it more myself I might get confident with it.  But Unique and H110 are better known quantities for me to play with. I've also burned a fair bit of 2400 in the 41.
