older Remington auto-loader
« on: June 27, 2009, 04:30:58 PM »

This is an "oldy" but built very sturdy.  Never had any problems or jams with it.

I'm not sure why this carbine was dropped from production.  Seems like it could even make a comeback if marketed properly.

Any comments are welcomed.

dont know anything about it but ive seen them in a lots of old law enforcement pics from the mid to late gangster era.that would tell me that they were a pretty good rig or at least the best from that particular time.i would love to know about it from anybody familair with them.tr, what is the caliber of that one?seems like they were made in a 30 cal cartridge of some sort.

This Remington 81A is chambered for 300 Savage which is ballistically similar to 30-06 and .308 out to about 175 yards.  Beyond this distance, velocity and energy can't keep up with the faster cartridges.

This is a take down model.  According to Remington factory source, it was made in 1949.

Without a modern scope sight, my middle-aged eyesight works against me.  But I can keep 5 shots into a white paper plate at 100 yards.

Very Nice!
I have a Model 8 in .30 Remington (basically a rimless 30-30) and an 81 in .35 Remington. Your 300 Savage chambering replaced the 30 Rem when the 8 was updated with the different stock. It's a Browning-designed delayed blowback action and there is a LOT of activity when the trigger is pulled.
Have you taken it down, yet? Unscrew the fore-end screw, pull the fore-end forward and off the barrel. There should be the handle of the take-down device inside a hollow in the fore-end. Ingenius!
What appears to be a chunky piece of iron comes up to the shoulder leveled and ready to fire. The elongated safety lever also serves as a dust cover for the action. This really was a well designed rifle that holds up well with other designs today. Maybe if Clint Eastwood and John Wayne had spent some time on the big screen with them we wouldn't be drooling over the lever guns.

My Dad had a Model 81 in 300 Savage, and good shooter.  My youngest brother inherited it and traded it off.  I still have the Lyman folding peep sight for a Model 81 in the box.

The largest collection I have seen of the old Remington autoloaders.  What calibers do you have?

The Remington 81A in 300 Savage seems like the perfect deer gun. I would love to have one-to hunt with, not look at.
