R   I'm surprised you don't have at least a dozen answers yet. What you should do though is go to the handi rifle catagories, and ask your question there.  A whole world of knowledge there.

It was posted to the new member's introduction forum but since it was an H&R question not an intro I just moved it here.

Naa we don't really like them here, Mine have only killed a dozen or so white tails, Nothing to like about them they are light and easy to carry usally shoot well, are fun to work on. I don't have a .25-06 so maybe I should get one of those to go with the other fifteen or so I have. I don't know maybe they are okay, Whatta you guys think? ;D

Yes..the 25-06's are worth it.It is a excellent round and is most times exceedingly accurate. Not to mention having it's longer 26" barrel you have a wide range of options for re boring them for a semi/full custom rifle. Many of us here already have done just that.

I've only got about a dozen Handis, but not a .25-06 yet.  Obviously there can't be much to like about them.......that's why a bunch of us have lots of them ;)  Welcome, and stick around.....it's addictive.

WELCOME Rkellogg!!

As mentioned, the 25/06 is generally a good shooter and overall a well liked caliber for us "handihaulics". Its worth is up to you, what are you comparing it to? Overall i feel the handis as a whole are VERY "worth it". If I didn't think so I wouldn't have nearly as many as I do... (Over 2dozen at last count.)

Welcome to the HANDI  Place of Knowledge ;D

Of all the forums on the internet this is the best !!!!!!!!!!!!! It is full of nice folks from all walks of life, sharing their experiences and knowledge in a friendly manner.
My 25-06 is a great shooter, I bought it because I traded for a full case of 25-06 Federal ammo. the 26" barrel is a shooter, slightly less than 3/4" group at 100 yards. It is very pleasant to shoot with very little felt recoil. I would recommend it with no hesitation!

I generally buy my Handis used off the pawn shop racks, but I'll special order one occasionally.  They're great rifles once you understand their peculiar little quirks and the FAQs are set up with a wealth of knowledge.

I consider the .25-06 cartridge almost ideal for most North American hunting.  I wouldn't hesitate to use one for any game up to the size of an elk.  With new bullets and modern powders it combines speed, power and accuracy with a recoil level that almost anyone can handle.  We've got one in the family and I'm always on the lookout for another.  If I see a nice example in the used gun rack, it's coming home with me.

Don't buy that first handi. The problem is there is no 12 step program to ween you off this nasty addiction. I should have stayed with Mausers only, Now I take money needed to feed the family, and feed my addiction. I am truly ashamed of my self.I thought I could handle it, now it handles me!  ;)

The 25-06 isn't quite so "Handi" as most of the others are, having the 26" barrel, but it's good to get all the speed ya can out of the cartridge.  And with the receiver being short, it still isn't much longer than a bolt action with a 22" barrel. 8)  And the damn things are like tater chips and puppys, ya can't have just one and they keep followin ya home. ::) ;D  DP

I personally don't own a 25-06 but a guy I used to work with swore by his. I think it was back in June of 09 that I joined GBO found it when I was surfing the web looking into 30-30s. When I joined all I had as far as handis was a 20ga TDC and a 44 mag.
I now have:
28ga Pardner
20ga TDC
20ga 22" mod choke (my smooth bore slugger)
20ga Tracker II
12ga Tracker II
30-30
308 ulra varmint
44 mag
45-70 composite stock
45-70 manlicher
I had had a few handis on and of over the years, but until comming to GBO and finding the great people here and the wealth of knowledge to bring my handis to thier full potential I could take them or leave them. Now I just want to acquire them.
223 ultra varmint from Dicks SG and a 280 are the next 2 on the want to get list.

By the way welcome aboard!

I traded for a 25-06 a few weeks ago, but the 44 mag barrel I bought for my son last month locked up tight to it. Soooo I've lost it for the time being and it might be a while before I can get that one back! At least till I find a 20 gauge to switch it over to. ;)

all those answers are in the FAQ and handi basics 101, and if that cant answer the specific questions  the search feature works good here.
or you could just ask again, I can guarantee that itll get an answer.

Personally Ive been really lucky, Ive not had any of the quirks per se, the occasional case sticking, but a light touch and some steel woll cured that.

Good luck, You will enjoy it

You won't have to worry about cases sticking.  All the new barrels are extractor not ejector and they don't stick.

So how do you bring handis up to thier full potential . What do I need to know . Is it things I can do or do I have to take them to a smith .

The FAQ's here is the best place to start..

Is the Handi different enough for you..Tuff question to answer.

Do you like how it shoulders ?

Do you like how it looks?

Can you be happy with a single shot?

Carrying a single shot as an adult isn't like when we were kids and that's all our parents would allow us. Many of us made the conscious decision to go afield with them because we are confident with our ability as hunters, and confident in our ability to wait for the best shot. Can you say the same ?

There are many reasons to use a single shot, and all of them good ones...Simplistic in design, good form factor for balance, pleasant to look at,easier to maintain than any repeater, easier to customize for personal taste, and usually very accurate.

Getting the most out of one will depend entirely on what you hope to achieve with one.All of us here have different expectations for each of them we own. Some like myself place accuracy at the forefront, while others don't place such a high value on it,and will accepts smaller groups as long as it is consistent and they can hunt with it and hit what they are
aiming at.

You have to place your own expectations on it,and then try to meet them.

Read thru the FAQ's...there is a ton of really good information about what these guns are all about and what some can do with them. For your 25-06 reading...start here..This link is in the FAQ's...it should wet your appetite a-little http://www.gun-tests.com/performance/feb97money.html

Figure out what you want...there are plenty of people here that will help as much as they can to help you..

Good Luck
