357 sig reloading tips?
« on: December 23, 2002, 06:24:25 AM »
If you can find data for the 158's sure, should kick smartly.  I think you will be OK with the 142's try a couple and see.   Load some inert (dummy)  rounds and try to push the bullet in the case with your thumb and index finger, if not then you are good.  ALthough I did come across a site that had .357 sig bullets that were so cheap it makes the hassle of pouring your own not worth it.  I will look for the site and send it to you.

I just got a 357SIG and don't even have dies for it, but I'd be interested in a good (cheap) source of bullets.  Post it here or send it to me at

Thanks

Try   www.montanagoldbullet.com  They show a profile so you will be able to see the difference between 9mm and 357 sig bullets in 125 grn.  They are like $53 for 1000. :D

I have the Sig pro 357.  I reload. Lee dies. 124 gr 9mm bullets from berrys mfg. rnfp Acc #2 powder max 6.2 gr.  This load even at max is not as hot as the factory gold dots. very pleasant to shoot

I believe berrys bullets are $41.00 per 1000 free shipping.

For the most part cast bullets at high speed stink, unless gas checked.  I use Hornady bulk packed 124 grain FP FMJ's for plinking and 124 Grain XTP's pushed by Hodgdon Longshot powder.  TO me in my 239, it actually shoots better when velocity is near max.  I can't explain that. Recoil is not bad either.  Just my opinion, not intended to step on any toes.
Another major issue is to make sure with the short neck that sufficient crimping exists to not allow the bullet to be pushed into the case upon hitting the feed ramp.  Using Dillon dies with the profile type crimp here is the method I have worked out.
First find the proper OAL.  Then feed the round into the gun from the magazine.  Measure the OAL, if it has changed add crimp in small increments.  When you can cycle a round thru the gun 5 times with no shortening , you have it right.
Another thing is the cases should be lubed due to being bottlenecked.
All in all it can be much more trouble than the 40 S&W, but to me it is acceptable becauseyou will never have a feeding problem if all is loaded right because of  the shape of the round.
Happy Shootin'
