I'm new to the forums so bare with me if I go against procedure. I have already done a search on the subject and still need help. I have a s/s encore rifle in .270, 209x50 and a blued pistol in 7-08. The problem is with the pistol. I am having misfire(light primer strike) problems about 50% of the time. It takes 2-3 tries to set off the round, then on the next round it may fire on the first try. I have already installed a Belm oversize hing pin with no difference in results. I have also disasembled the gun several times to clean and inspect the firing pin area and everything looks to be in near new condition. I might need to add that I am using CCI primers which I have heard can be too hard? I have not tried another brand of primer yet but will do so the next chance I get to go to the range. I was just wondering if any of you have had the same problem? Also, I may need to add that this frame is a 4-digit (early I presume). Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. I had the same problem with CCI primers. Switched to Federals and solved it. When resizing, I bump the shoulder just enough so that the case rim protrudes about .002" from the chamber. This number may vary from gun to gun due to variances in the frame/barrel gap. Good luck!

remove the barrel from the frame. take a set of feeler gauges to see how much of a fired, resized case sticks out of the barrel. then take the feelers, or plasti-gage(available at auto parts store) and measure the barrel to frame gap. if the case sticks out too far, you may have to adjust your sizing die down to bump the shoulders back some. do that until the fired resized case protrudes slightly less than the previously measured barrel to frame gap.
as cknight stated, you also should not bump the shoulder back too far. do not let a fired resized case go below flush with the chamber end of the barrel. use the barrel for a gauge to set your sizing die correctly.

I had a buddy run into misfire problems on a .223 barrel. We changed out the primers from CCI and the problem entirely went away. A lot of people told us the primer couldn't be the problem and it had to be (fill in the blank), but when it was all over, the primer was the problem. Try a new brand. I know a lot of guys love them, but I also know a lot of guys who have had problems with them. I won't use them anymore.
