what do you think of this gun for squirlle and rabbit

I own a 10/22 and it shoots great. I cant count the number of squirells I've nailed with it. Very reliable if you keep it clean and replace the factory magazine with a quality after-market one.

I have two 10/22's. One stock factory and one with all the aftermarket bells. The factory one shoots ok for squirrels and other small game and the semi-auto 10 round mags are cool for plinking. Out of the box accuracy is average until you get 300/400 rounds through it then it gets better. Also finding what ammo the gun likes best is worth while.
I also have a Henry lever action and its cheap a Walmart. Think I paid $188. It also shoots fine and I like it specifically because it eats all ammo. Longs/shorts/subsonic. I use it in the backyard with CCI CB longs = very quiet.

I agree with the keep it clean statement but why replace the magazine? The factory mag is very reliable if you do your part and keep it clean as well. I have yet to see an aftermarket magazine for this gun that is more reliable than the magazine that was designed to go with the gun. Plus it fits flush which (IMO) looks a lot nicer than any aftermarket mag.

BTW - The 10/22 is a great gun for your application. Plus as mentioned there is a whole world of aftermarket parts out there should you get bitten by the customizing bug :grin:

I agree completely. I have yet to find an after market magazine that works better than the factory. This not only goes for the 10/22 but the 77/22 as well. Both are great plinking/small game rifles available with loads of after market items you can add on to really make it YOUR rifle. Lawdog

The first factory mag I had I cleaned about every other time I cleaned my rifle, after about 3,000 rounds it stoped feeding. The next one I got I cleaned every time I cleaned the rifle and that one lasted about 4,000 rounds. I have a friend who had a similar problem but I would be suprised if he ever cleaned his magazine. Now I use a butler creek 10 rd mag and have yet to have a feeding problem in the over 15,000 rounds I have put through it. Its possible I just got unlucky with the factory mags and very lucky with the after market ones.

Don't forget you can also retension the spring in your Ruger mag. I imagine over time it could lose some of it's strength although I've never encountered the problem myself.

I agree that you'll have some bad factory mags and some good aftermarket stuff. But from what I've seen the occurence of bad factory mags are few and far between whereas bad aftermarkets are common. I also don't care for the mags sticking out the bottom of the gun. I think it looks nicer being flush.

I have my original 1022 rifle and 2 mags that I bought 25 years ago, the rifle has well over 10,000 rounds through it, I keept track for a long while, I put 1500 to 2000 throught it last summer alone. I average 500 to 1000 a year for as long as I can remember.

I've never had to do anything but wipe the mags off after shooting. Clean the rifle once or twice a year. I would say that the only time I have ever had feed problems was because of the ammo not the rifle or mag.

I love My 1022's

I agree,factory mags are the best I,ve used. The 10/22 is an awsome gun for the money and come in many variations. I own 2 of these gems and have not had any problems with 1000's of rounds being fired through both.

I've been using the same mag that came with mine almost 37 years ago. Hard telling how many thousands of rounds have gone through it. What's cleaning, something you do every year or so right? Still kills great. Can't say enough good about it.
