Federal Flite Control Wads?
« on: February 28, 2010, 02:15:03 AM »
Has anyone tried them?  I was wondering how they would work in my 19" open bore.  Cheap winchesters start getting a thin pattern past 25 yards.

I'm hoping you get some good answers. I have wondered if this would extend the range of a HD shotgun to make it more useful.

I am looking at 12ga loads.  I saw a post by a another member getting a 6" pattern at 50 yards with a .410.  He also said he got good long range patterns in a blackpowder shotgun with a cylinder bore using full length shot cups without the splits.  I was thinking of doing some hand loads until I saw the federal flite control.  I think it may be the same concept.  I will probably pick some up this week and give them a try.  Some of what I read sounded promising.

I emailed Federal, they recommended using a standard full choke for their 20g Heavyweight loads, I shoot the 1½oz #7 Heavywieght loads in my 20ga TDC for Turkey, with a Trulock full, I get exceptional patterns at 40yds, tried a load in my 20ga Pardner modified, 30yd pattern would make a tom very dead.

My Huntin parter shoots 3" 12ga lead Flitecontrols in his Mossy 500 thru an extra full turkey choke, he gets great patterns at 40yds. One thing about the Flitecontrol wads, they fly much further than conventional wads, we've found them anywhere from 35-45yds away, sometimes past the target at 40yds, most fall about 5yds short of it tho.

I haven't tried them from an open bore but out of my 870 and a IC choke tube they throw basically a full choke pattern, but if you go to a modified choke it doesn't pattern well at all.  Oh this is with the Federal Black Cloud Steel Shot so the lead will probably preform differently but the flight control wads do work in steel shot anyway.

I have been searching the internet looking for results.  It seems with 3" 00 buck from a cylinder bore at 20 yards you can expect about a 6" pattern.  Which is awesome.
