on a handgun,
what is a compensator, what does it do, where is it located, and what-if any-special cleaning is necessary?

A compensator is much like a muzzle brake on a rifle. They primarily decrease muzzle rise to aid in quick shooting. They usually have a chamber inline with the bore with a large opening at the top to direct gas upward to help hold the muzzle end down. As for cleaning I use carb cleaner and a small brush to clean the chamber and port on my S&W powerport revolver. Dave
