New 22 hornet
« on: March 05, 2010, 12:28:48 PM »
I just ordered a new synthetic 22 hornet from R&R.  I take it that the twist should be 1 in 14.  Anybody with the newer hornets have any suggestions as to bullets, powders.  I ordered some barnes 45 gr banded solid spitzers and some remington brass.  I have both Lil Gun and 4227.  Any suggestions as to other combos.  Any particular bullets/bullet weights with which you have had good luck?  Any replies would be most appreciated.

I hope the 'heavies' work out for you, that is what the Hornet has needed for a long time (IMHO). Because mine wouldnt work with them I went to the 25-20 and 25-35 (I wanted to play with them anyway), but a downloaded 223 probably would have worked too.
Good luck, it is a neat, economical, relatively quiet cartridge, just go slow & easy in reloading, the cases are thin. BTW, I really liked the Lee Collet Sizing Die for mine, it saved a lot of time & mess (case lube, etc).

Use 13 Grains of LIL GUN and either 35 Grain Vmax or even better 34 grain Midsouth varmint nightmares. You won't be disapointed.

My 22 Hornet shot 40g V-Max and 40g Nosler BT fine, but could not stabilize 40g Sierra Blitzkings! All over a full case of L'il Gun. Go figure? No idea what the twist was, the 50 V-Max stabilized just fine too.

g-crank1 - I have a Hornady custom grade die set on order because I have heard that it works well with small caliber rounds - but the the Lee Collet Sizer caught my eye too, and I am not above mixing things up a bit.  I do like the Hornady and the Redding seating dies, though.  I have had more variability with seating depth with the Lees.  I am used to loading bigger cases, so it is going to feel a little strange weighing out these tiny amounts of powder!  - but my wallet will appreciate that part.

Just fill up the case with L'il Gun and be damned...one modern fact of life is you can't overfill a Hornet case with L'il Gun! Just don't try and seat flat based bullets when the powder is at the top of the neck...you will get crushed cases everytime. Just brush off a mm or 2 with your finger and you will be fine...or use any tapered base bullet.

I don't remember load combination, but I have 22 Hornet I love.

I checked my bullets. They are 45 grain. I am not sure what brand since I don't have the original box anymore. I got a thousand pack and put em in a rubbermaid container. I think I may have loaded IMR 4198 but I would have to go look it up to be sure.

You can get just the Lee Collet Size Die alone rather than a set. With it you can adjust to the perfect neck tension for the bullet dia used. Brass lasts longer too. If you have multiple rifles you may (but not always) need to keep the brass segregated due to chamber dimensions.
