I.D. Mauser

Can anyone I.D. this large ring Mauser for me? Country, History, etc,etc. Aquired it from pawn-shop. Looks to have military stepped barrel which has been turned down to approx #2 sporter contour. And is now chambered in 30-06. The only problem is, previous owner tried using one of those chamber bushings to convert it to 308win. Now the bushing is stuck (I do mean stuck) and a broken shell extractor will not work. Pawn shop owner figured it for junk and wanted to get rid of it. Offered $90 and got it.

Not sure.
I am sending this so it can come back and I can find it and look it up in Mausers of the world.

Well, it looks like it was made by FN.  But who for is the question.   ;D  I've seen that crest before.  Seems to me there's an internet site with pictures.  I'll look...

I checked what I always thought was the most comprehensive Mauser Crest source and looked.  There wasn't any just like yours.   :-\

I know I've seen that crest, but I may be thinking of something else...  :-[

But heck!  A good pre war FN action alone is worth $90!   ;D  Well, it would be to me... if I had bought it, but I didn't ...  Don't really know what it's worth to anyone else...  :-\

My dads Chech mauser has a crest similar to that. I am working on memory but I know it was a lion on it.

This looks alot like the lion but it seems there is a little more to your crest.

FN 30-06 short rifle made for the Belgian Congo Army. FP stands for Force Publique,official name of that army. Too bad it's sporterized, . On the positive side, the stuff FN made rivals the quality of anything made by the Mauser Werke.

This kinda reminds me of a Venezuelan model 24/30 FN I bought 25 years ago. The metal work was perfect including the barrel. Some dolt sanded the stock and removed all the markings and cartouches. This is a pretty rare rifle. So I scolded my ex-brother in-law and traded him a 90 dollar sks for it. At this point, I made a sporter out of it,in the British mold of a Rigby. Still have it. One thing about the old Mausers,when you look down the barrel,the rifling looks like a corkscrew. Looks pretty cool.

Thanks for the I.D.  I’d be interested in hearing more about this Belgian Congo Army. Was this a rifle used by the Belgian Gov to arm native troops?

I’m kind of toying with the idea of rebarreling it to 35 Whelen. Not that I actually need that caliber for anything I hunt.

Once upon a time a lot of european countries colonized different parts of the world. I imagine it was used to arm Belgian troops serving in the area ala the French Foreign Legion. A google search could probably turn up the info you are interested in.
