Loading for Encore 15'' 308-Win
« on: March 09, 2010, 06:13:37 PM »
I want to load the 308 down to approximately 30-30 performance. I plan on using a Sierra 150gr FP bullet they market for 30-30. I have Accurate 2015 and 2495 powder; also Varget.  Accurate lists beginning at 37gr of 2015 in rifles.  Could anyone recommend a starting load ?  I believe 27gr 2015 should do what I want or close to it.  I'm open to suggestions.  Richard

I won't go on to tell you that it is the same, "but" in a recent call to Accurate I was told that their 2495 was about the same as H4895 in all aspects. To be confirmed however one might want to call and be sure for themselves.

This said, I have a Ruger with a 16" barrel, and have used H4895 for the same purpose your looking at. I purchased some Remington bulk 150gr RN 30-30 bullets for thumping hogs at close range with. I dropped the loads to accommodate the close ranges and try and duplicate the expansion of the full power loads. These shot very well out to 100yds and the velocities were in the 2000-2200fps range.

I used the Hodgdon Youth loads to get an idea of where to start. Using their data, you can start at the Youth load starting data and work up all the way to the max load listed on the pistol or rifle data page. I generally use the pistol data for this rifle due to the barrel length as it provides more accurate velocities for the loads used.

Good luck with your loads. Hope this helps.

41,  thanks for the advice.  I looked at Hodgdon info and loaded 5 each 27gr 2015 and 5 of 30gr 2495.  I hope to get out soon and give a range report.  RP
