Long Range Sighting-In the 45-70
« on: March 13, 2010, 08:50:43 AM »
Ah, at last I have access to ranges where shooting at up to 500 yards is possible.  So far, I've been using my 30-cal's.  But, I'd really like to try hitting something at 500 yards with my A.Uberti 1874 Sharps, "Downunder Model" (with the 34" barrel and vernier peep sights).  To get me "on the paper" ... does anyone have point of impact data at 100 yards for "zero" at 200, 300, 400 and 500 yards?  I'd like to know how high, above point of aim, the bullet holes ought to be at 100 yds to be "on the paper" at the longer distances.  Anyone who actually shoots at 200 to 500 yards with a 45-70 ... I'd enjoy hearing from you.

The 300 grain fed fusion round I shoot says zero at 200 puts you 5.9" high at 100 and 146.5" low at 500.  I haven't even tried shooting mine past 100, so I can't help you out to much here, other than what the computer data says.

Aim High...

OK, actually, find the ballistic coefficient and velocity of the bullet you are going to shoot.  Go on line, and look up "ballistic coefficient tables".  There are several programs to choose from.  Look for the BC of your bullet, and the table, based on the velocity, will tell you the drop you can expect at various yardages.
