made my second longest shot on coyotes this morning???
« on: February 11, 2010, 07:38:24 AM »
;D this morning I went out on my regular coyote patrol...decided I would slip back into a pasture and try a call from a big hay stack..I had seen a couple dogs in the area, since it was still, I firgured this would be a good morning...After I got to the stack and got settled I just started to glass when I spotted a big dog running across the pasture, looking at my hay stack...I had been busted, before I got to make one call.  Maybe the crunchy snow gave me away...I watched the old dog run and run, he kept slowing like he would like to stop but kept putting distance between us....I kept estimating the range as best I could, since it was dead still, (very unusual) I decided I would try one if he stopped ...finally, he started slowing and came to a halt....I had my .22-250 Ackley with me as I figured on calling, when he stopped I put the 700 yard pin on the upper 1/4 of his chest, at 14 power he looked pretty clear....I squeezed one off, and to my surprise, down he went...I had guess the range right, but he managed to get to his feet again...I put the same pin on top of his shoulders and squeezed another 50 grain Serria Blitzking off...this time he dropped like a stone, never moved........After making sure he was down for the count, I did a measurement of the shot....after a double check it came out to 736 yards...My longest shot with a .22-250 rifle, and my second longest ever.....The first round hit both back legs...either jerked a bit, or a small breeze drifted my bullet...for my pride, I will say it was the latter....... the second round took him right over the heart, I was surprized to see about a quarter to half dollar size hole on the off side...Not bad for so great a distance....Ah, if I guy could just make these shots everytime, but then I guess it would cease to be fun...He was a fair sized male, I would guess maybe 35-40 pounds he seemed longer than my little golden  and she weights about 58 pounds...Good morning for me, but not for poor old Mr. Coyote.....

Well done, and keep it up.

Now that's the best bedtime story I've had.

What powder/primer was used and how much drop do you figure there was?

Amazing the 50gr bullet would go that far and do that damage. I have some of those to try. I only have reg. 22-250s but have always been impressed with them.

Excellent shot and story. Thanks

:D Thanks..to be honest, it just all came together with this one..I have missed half a dozen similar rounds....The damage of that 50 grain Blitzking surprised me also...for the distance it was excellent expansion...I am not sure they all always expand so well...But it was exciting..as for the load Big Varmit, it was a near max load of H4895 and a cci200 primer...This Ackley was made with a Pac Nor barrel and honestly is very accurate even with 2200 rounds down the tube...I am sure I was looking at over 75 inches of drop on this shot maybe a tad more..I recently raised the point of Impact at 100 yards to about 2" for shooting coyotes in the winter...I just did some quick figures before going out and decided what pin should be close at what distance...got it right this time...I really must sit down and so some target shooting with this one and a big target..Did that with my target 300, but only out to 600 with this one (the .22-250 AI...one must admit there was lots of luck on this shot, but I have been seeing snow kick just under them, just over them for a half dozen similar shots so I had everything come together on this one...If one doesn't shoot one doesn't score..The one nice thing with the dots or lined scope, when I made a good shot or hit, I knew exactly where I was holding...Thanks for all the good wishes..

Most all of us will probably never get the chance to do this but I like to be able to live it through you and pick up info here and there in case I ever get the chance to experience something close to this. I would get as much enjoyment out of kicking the snow up, just missing, at that range as you do. Here in the midwest it's hard to get permission if you do find a long range area. I have been lucky to shoot a few P.D.s in Colorado, even had a blast shooting rocks up the side of a mountain. Shot steel critters in Tucson. Had a nice long range (for here) G.H.
22-250 55gr blew the offside shoulder out at half the distance of your shot from my bedroom window. I enjoyed that. I've not given up on doing it but time is growing short. You are lucky to have these opportunities.
Thanks for the info and I enjoyed your story.

Having made some impressive very long range shots with my 22-250's over the years on varmints and predators, what surprises me most is the knock down you got from the frangible little BlitzKing at that range after shedding about 85% of the foot pounds of energy it started out with.

For fun I ran some numbers on the 22-250AI...
Muzzle: 4100FPS & 1866ME
50 BlitzKing @ .248 BC
Sighted in at 275 to be 2" high at 100 with this load.
Temp 45   Elevation 5000  3MPH cross wind

At 750 yards the BK is chugging along at 1660FPS with about 305 foot pounds of energy left, has dropped 85 inches and drifted about 17 inches.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

:D Ladobe,,,That is good information...I think I said this morning was dead still that was unusual for Wy. in the winter...I have went over this shot in my head several times, and as I said the first hit was in the back legs... this prevented him from getting off on me...When I thought about the second shot, and I have done it a hundred times, he was slightly quartered away from me...that little bullet may have hit a rib going in, and thus the larger exit hole...I was surprised at the knock down of the bullets and exit...I f  I had been going to try this shot knowingly, I would have had my target .300, but I got by this time...

Bigvarmit, your comment about shooting the chuck made me think of how lucky I am to be here...All of my life I have lived with in a short drive or walk of hunting..When I was young, I hunted something almost everyday, from chucks to crows to foxes...something of course game when in season...one of the things that attracted me to Wy. was the large amt. of varmit hunting...by luck, I landed in the Platte Valley..the first 20 years I lived here killing a coyote was an event...due to high fur prices, and predator control efforts...but the slack was taken up with gophers, prairie dogs, and jackrabbits...the varmit shooting was unreal in those days...mostly I shot gophers with various .22 rifles, simply because there were sooooooo many....and the prairie dogs were also good..one rancher offered to buy my .22 shells to shoot on his place, but I told him I would use my .222 and .22-250....they numbers were fantastic...the whitetail dogs are easier shooting than blacktails...and the gophers wow...the first morning I shot the ranch I just mentioned , I took a brick of Remingtion 22 LRHP ammo and some extras, maybe a 100..when I pulled into the fields, it was a drizzly morning in May...not great for gophers, but I figured I would try, I was teaching so only had the weekend...I opened the gate, and drove in I think I had a Remington 521T...I would drive a ways and park and shoot..(it was legal) before I went a quarter mile, I had shot up all my ammo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I shot thousands of gophers in that field over the next years, but about the time I retired, the forman died suddenly...his step son took over the ranch, now they charge a mere $275 per day to shoot...As for coyotes, in the early 90's the population took off..Some where around the middle 90's we began to kill them regularly, on most hunts a guy could count on seeing some...that has held til now...lucky for me I do have a permit to hunt coyotes on the big ranch with all the gophers...At present my girl friend and I are considering a move to the northern part of the state, more isolated, and hopefully more shooting...good luck...time is short, hunt hard...
