How to drill and rifel cut a barrel?

Does anyone have any links or books to see how to drill the bore and cut the rifles in a barrell? I would like to know how to keep the drilling straight.

Looking at the H & R hinge and lock as compared to other single and double style "tip up/break top" firearms, it appears it would be easy to jig tooling to produce the H&R barrel hinges and weld them on. The hinge block is the key after the barrel is ready. Machine jigs for fitting and tollerances would be more precise than human fitting. (I figure they use jigs but arn't too close on tollerances evidently). Set up for the operations of grinding and welding the hinge to the barrel would be simple, then make replacements for wear surfaces on the jigs.

I have tried to get books on barrel makeing before but all the "gunsmith schools" will only sell the entire course. (Same with motorcycle repair, the schools and mfgs are the only ones with some manuals and will only sell the entire repair course.)

I like to read about these type things, not "do" everything I am interested in reading or watching a video on. (I like to have beat all my fingers off trying to learn to make arrow heads.)

Like I said, I am not interested in doing it. I would like to read about it or watch some videos on the subject.

PS, I watched a guy smelt a ball of iron from iron ore found at Winona MS. he did the demo at the Natchez Trace Park, Pioneer Days at Jackson, MS. Took him 2 days and two pickup loads of charcoal to get a ball of iron the size of your fist. I'm not interested.

I have a few OLD books by P. O. Ackley that describe the various methods of the time and will try to get the titles for you this week. I never actually done the process myself, but have threaded and chambered a few barrel blanks in my day and that is satisfying when the work is complete.

The hole is drilled using a "gun drill", which is really a self guided boring bar.  It only cuts on one edge.  The barrel is turned around the drill as coolant is pumped at real high pressure through the bit, that also removes the cuttings from the hole.  Larry

I think one of the foxfire books had info on making a wooden rifling machine for rifling muzzle loaders.

Google "The Complete Modern Gunsmith" by Howe.  The entire 2 volume set is available in PDF online for free.  Excellent book.  Firefox 5 is the one with rifle building.  Very general info in the Firefox books.

Yep, thats it.  Its on my laptop and I didn't have it handy when I wrote the title.  If I remember right, I downloaded it from scribd or something like that.
