Model 25 Savage bolt problem ?
« on: March 07, 2010, 12:42:22 PM »
Just recieved a Model 25 Savage in 204 Ruger.  It has an irritating prob I am looking for help with.  I read on another site that other people have this problem also.

Anyway, here it is.  After pulling the trigger, the bolt is extremely hard to lift.  It start easy, then seems to bind down hard.  I have some shoulder problems, and I have to take the rifle from my shoulder to chamber another round.

Any ideas or suggerstions ?

Is this after fireing a round or just cocking the hammer when opening the bolt on an empty chamber? Larry

I have not fired the gun yet.  With a snap cap, I pulled the trigger, and then the problem occurs.  It occurs to a much lesser extent if the trigger is not released.

That is just the cam on the bolt lifting the hammer.  At some point in the bolt cycle the hammer has to be cocked.  Some rifles do it on opening and some do it on closing.  The effore you feel is the hammer being pulled back against the spring used to strike the primer.  I bet you can see the hammer being pulled back if you look  at the rear of the bolt as you lift the bolt handle.  Larry

just a thing you have to deal with with a savage.

there are some theories of cutting the spring in order to lighten the lift. one thing you might try and it helped mine greatly is to smooth out the operation of the bolt sliding in the reciever.  i used some stuff to polish this out by closing and opening the bolts hundreds of times while watching tv.

fred moreo can time and true it he claims this helps but it costs too much for me. matter of fact i took my savage up to a neighbor who is a remington man and he was impressed with my savage.  he said it wasnt all that much harder than his remington.

hope this helps some.

Well, it only happens when lifting the bolt.  Sliding in and out is smooth.

I think Larry was right as far as the hammer spring.  I looked at it last night, in a quiet room.  As I lifted the bolt, I could hear the spring loading. So, I think that is it.

Just curious.  From my name, obvious I am a shotgun shooter.  A Remington 1100 like to be operated with a small amount of lube, while my Beretta 391 loved to be dripping.  Does the Savage have a preference ?

Lube it up and see if it helps.  Larry

If you think that one's bad try working the bolt on a Mosin Nagant. :D
