Staining laminate stocks?

I have finished laminates before with polys and linseed. However, I was thinking of staining a laminated Brown/brown grip w/ a darker reddish stain to kind of resemble Cocobolo wood. has any one ever attemped staining laminate before? Would it work?

I have had very good luck with Fiebing's leather dyes...even color and rich hues.  Saddle tan and dark brown my faves.

Heres what I came up with. it's my own recipe of lin speed, mahagany stain,and cabernet stain. I'm still waiting on my encore grip to show up so I can put a finish to it.  This has been applied to a nutmeg laminate.

Saddle tan leather dye, water soluable from Hobby lobby,  and satin polyurethane spray.
