before my final sanding I tried a little true-oil on an area I could sand out and it was too lite. went with a cherry stain/sealer from minwax and matched my forearm just right. because this t-hole is going on my 45-7- BC,I trimmed the butt down and put a limbsaver on. the pad that came with the stock was way too thin. hope this helps a little.
Deceased due to a 3rd stroke on Dec. 12, 2011.

RIP John.

Even a little water on the dry wood surface helps bring out the color and grain. I mix & match my dyes on the wood to even out the tones and colors and 'live with it' for a while before topcoats. FWIW, I prefer leather dye to water based 'wood' stain.

The two brands Ive used are alcohol based. They seem to 'carry' pigment better into the wood grain and dont continue to raise the grain with repeated applications like the water based.
Another trick Ive used with success is to 'bone' the wood after staining (with either base stain). I use a small piece of polished antler (though a hard plastic may work as well) which fits me comfortably. It is important not to have any ridges which would gouge into the wood surface. Press firmly and work a small area at a time to compress the wood fibers after you  have the color you want. It will smooth and polish the surface and look quite good, but still will need topcoats to seal and protect it. If you used a water based stain and got raised grain this will work better than trying to 'whisker' it again, which will mess up the stain tones.

Nutmeg is what we call cinnamin laminate& natural laminate appears to be the same as laminated palletwood.
