My Marlin 917-V seems to shoot better every time out.
« on: March 08, 2010, 01:23:19 PM »
I have to say this little 17 HMR has really impressed me and it seems to shoot better every time I take it to the range. :o ;D Here are the pictures of the targets I shot today. The squares on the targets measure 1"x1". They are 4 shot groups shot 100 yards. The top target on the lower left of it was a 1 hole group that measeres 1/8" center of bullet hole to center of bullet hole. This is the smallest group I have ever shot with it. In fact that is the smallest group I have shot since I did about the same with a Remington 700 SPS Varmint 243. So what do you guys think can this little rifle shoot or what? Dale

I like mine too,
I bought mine for a couple of reasons.
1 My friend got the stainless steel one and that thing is a tack driver.  OK Tacks are too big to shoot with it but brads work well  ;D
2 i read one of Col Coopers last rantings about how he saw no need for the 17 and I bought one to write an article.
3) we also found that in the open areas in So Cal where rocks abound and the 22 will zing off even with a hit the 17 will come apart and the small parts of the round really do not go far or through much.
I started to do tests to write the article and we shot at water bottles, potatos, and rocks with walls of butchers paper behind the targets to see how far rounds would go with 22LR, 22mag and the 17HMR.  I was suprised at how safe the 17 was for semi populated areas and how the little 22 LR just plowed through sheet after sheet after going through potatos, water bottles and bouncing off rocks and angled steel.
Oh an they work well on small game.  As long as you make either head shots or soft tissue hits it is not too bad but you hit boiler room and any bone and you have a mess.

They are great guns. I have a 917 VS wearing a 6X18X40 scope and it will do the same as yours on a still day. It will only do it with  Hornady 17 gr. V-MAX. It doesn't care much for the 20 gr. bullets. It is rough on rabbits and prairie dogs. My problem is the wind as it is always blowing some. Some is supposed to be 50 mph today.  ::)

The wind was blowing about 10 MPH that day and I tried to wait for it to die down before shooting. I also tried some 20 grain bullets that day and it was grouping about 1 1/2" with those. Mine seems to like the 17 grain Hornady V-Max and the Federal 17 grain V-Max best. Dale

Looks like a shooter to me Dale...I reckon that the rifle was always ok and that your "bench" techniques such as breathing & trigger control are improving.

Yes I have tried the 17 gr Winchester V-Max and they come in about third place with Hornady, Federal being first and second place. Those CCI hollow points were shooting all over the place. I would say 2" groups or so. I would still like to try out a couple more brands of 20 grainers to see if I can find one that shoots. I would really like to try the 20 grain Hornady XPT.

Have any of you tried these?
glanceblamm you may be right. My shooting did not drop off to much this winter because I managed to make it to the range several times this winter. Dale

Supposedly all the ammo is made by CCI. A person would think all the ammo with the same weight bullet would shoot about the same. But it doesn't. I tried Federal and Winchester with the 17 gr. bullet and they won't group with the Hornady. I haven't tried any Remington as it brings a premium price around here. As well as my rifle shoots the Hornady I will stick with it and quit messing with the other.

You made a wise choice in getting that gun. As a Squirrel rifle, it seem that no matter
how far those little buggers run, they can't get out of range! put the crosshairs
on the head and Squirrel Dumplings are not far behind! The Little Hm2 version (shown)
Does not tear them up quite as bad though. The FMJ .17HMR is an impressive
round penetration wise. When big brother realizes that kevlar will not stand
up to them, They will probably ban them or something.
