do they make a decent double action revolver in rimfire and if so who makes it wanting one for plinking and maybe hunting 4"-6" bbl. any help would be appreciated. Terry

In new guns, its Smith & Wesson, especially when you require "hunting". Although I love Ruger products, their double action .22's are configured so differently that they cannot offer the same utility. Anything beyond these two is simply an effort in frustration. In the used market, beside S & W, there are Colt Diamondbacks, Officer's Targets, Official Police and the tiny Police Positives.

thanks for the info will have to start looking for something will probably look for used as new smiths are kind of expensive but maybe used i can find something .

To add to the used gun list, rugers sp101 in 22 lr is a really nice compact DA 22lr.

I have the ruger as well as S&Ws and like them both.

Saw a Colt Diamondback .22 4in w/box at Cabelas yesterday going for $1400. I think a new or used Smith would be just fine.

Smith 617 (K frame) for a heavy target gun, model 63 (J frame) for a light trail gun.

thanks for all the suggestioons think i will skip that colt you saw. i like both the rugers and the smiths but i just don't usually see many affordable smiths for sale but do see some rugers now and then.

I vote for Smith and Wesson - Model 617 in 4 or 6 inch or M17 6 inch. If you happen to luck on to a Model 18 which is a 4 inch - buy it. The Ruger SP101 is also a good 4 inch, but hard to find. Again, if you see one - buy it. I think a good used model 17 is the most affordable and best shooting and I have all of the above with 4 inch and 6 inch barrels with iron sights and red dots.

I shoot the Model 617's more than the others and I shoot a lot.

I traded up to a 617 recently. So far it's been a pleasure to own.
I've got about 4 or 5 thousand rounds through it now and it just keeps getting better.
Normally I wouldn't suggest spending that kind of money but my experience with it has been rewarding.
For years my browning buckmark was my favorite, now the smith gets all my attention.
Grandson has already asked me if I will give it to him in my will...........

I agree with pasquot -- If you want something solid but inexpensive, the Charter Arms is the way to go. I like the 2" barrel, but for target shooting and hunting take a look at the target model.

I've had decent luck with the Charter Arms also over the years. Decent little guns that will serve you well.
There's another economical one out there now also called I believe Frontier or Heritage? Might be wrong, but they're sub $200 and look okay.
Just expect to get what you pay for. My collection runs from one end to the other so I'm not being a gun snob.
Just being realistic is all.

The Heritage Arms Rough Rider is a good, cheap alternative. Have had the chance to shoot 3 different ones; all good shooters. $200 price range; I think theres a couple barrel lengths. Funky safety on the side next to the hammer. You might also wanna look into a used H@R, if price is an object. Lots of them out there, built like tanks. The $1000 colts look somewhat better,I'd suspect.

Looked again at the Colt for $1400+ thought about going back and offering 1200 cash out the door but I don't have that kinda of money

I'm thinking my next firearm purchase will be a DA .22 revolver. As Ruger will not update its SP platform with a more than 6rd .22. I'll be looking at Charter Arms on the low end and S&W on the high end, not much to look at in between. The 617 is the top of the line IMHO but I'm most likely to get a new Model 63. Although there is an old Model 63 in the classifieds now. If I had the money saved up I might start bargining for that one.

try a Taurus 941. I can hit a pie plate consistently at 100 steps. Shot a large animal with it and dropped it at 23 steps (head shot on a still animal). The only problem I am having is finding a scope mount so I can put my sightmark holo on it...

Conference I was at this weekend had a S&W table. They had two sweet double action 22lr SS revolvers, (one four inch and one 6 inch.) Don't know the model # but they were a clone to the 686. Really nice looking guns, good feel and balance to them.
