1st day shooting the handi
« on: March 05, 2010, 04:02:26 AM »
what up everyone

I decided to take up coyote hunting and stumbled upon the .223 handi at wally world picked it up for 290 already has a 3x9 scope mounted. I took it out and shot it yesterday and I was very happy with it. Did not take long at all to sight in. I started out using 55gr rem fmj could group but every once in a while theyre would be a couple all over the place. Then i decided to throw in some hornaday 55gr vmaxx and it made a big difference. Group around half an inch at 100 yards. My question is what factory loads do you guys shoot? anyone else have problems with the remington 55gr fmj's?

I shoot no fmj don't know why just don't.
if you are getting 1/2" group at 100yards out of the box, i would no worry
too much about what anyone else is doing. GOOD WORK, close enough for
coyote work. ;D

1/2" is rare enough for a Handi. Especially one that came with a cheap scope, using factory ammo, on the first time out. I would not change a thing. In fact, I'd probably keep the ammo box and buy every single round from that lot that I could find.

I have seen 1 Handi out of 30+ shoot 1/2". And that was with handloads and a $300 scope.

I bought my first NEF about a month ago.  The Ultra Varmint in .223.  I also got 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards.  Love the gun and wouldn't trade it for the world.  Its my first NEF, but with those results I think I'll be getting others.

This is My 2 cents. In all my shooting, I have never been
able any fmj bullets to shoot worth a Sxxx.
For some reason They just don't. Marv.

I would even write down the lot # & see if I could find more of the same lot #. Go back to the store that you got that ammo from & try to get some more of the same.  For sure I'd get more of the same ammo. Good shooting you are going to enjoy that one.

Depends on the bullet. Military stuff is generally CHEAP. And CHEAP ain't built for accuracy. Or consistency. There are tons of FMJ or TMJ target bullets. Those cost more and shoot better.

There are exceptions. The K31 military ammo is considered the gold standard in that gun.
