.45 Silouette?
« on: March 07, 2010, 03:33:45 AM »
So has anyone considered a custom barrel/chamber in .45 Silouette? It's the 45/70 case cut to 1.5" length.
Could be the perfect .458" bore round, or a costly trip that reinvents the .45 Colt [ ;D].
Just wanting a case to powder capacity best for a 14" barrel.
I'll be shopping for a .45/70 unless the idea keeps growing on me.

The advantage of the 45/70 or Silouette is the truely massive bullets available for them. I think it boils down to what you are doing with the gun. Playing around is ok too.

I don't see a whole lotta gap between my 45Colt w/ 300-335gr'er's and my 45-70Gov w/ 300-405gr'er's....but, then a new round is always exciting.  We did away with the "need thing" long ago. ;)

The excellent 45/70 round is 'perfect' in a rifle barrel. However it does have more powder space than is needed or desired [?] for pistol barrels OR reduced loads in rifle barrels. I think what you wind up with in a 45 Silouette is a 45 Win Mag with RIMMED cases, and a .458" bore for a wealth of bullet availability, and a more ideal powder capacity for loads in the hand held gun power range.
A silouette chamber could be cut pretty easily with a boring bar, too. One of the reamer makers should have a Silouette drawing somewhere? All it takes is $$  ::)
If we keep talking this up I just might take the plunge. Rimmed cases are desired in the Contender, right?
It's cheap to discuss on the internet anyway! ;D

BTW, I'm not 'new' to this. I built a Ruger 77 Mark II in .458 American, another round 'bettered' for a different setup when the full length magnum round is way more than necessary. The .458 American is a .458 Win Mag cut to 2". About 2 months after completing my .458x2 American, Marlin announced the .450 Marlin round...just about identical to the .458x2 except Marlin wisely designed the case with a longer magnum 'belt' to prevent chambering in other mag rifles.

A friend used to shoot 605 grain bullets in his 45/70, it broke the grip bolt, he had to go to a supertanium. I fired it once. Once was enough. It was a little much for the cases too. What fun!

Do the case walls have a taper that might cause 0.458" bullets a problem when cut like that?

It could but the .45 Silouette has already been 'invented' by steel silouette shooters. I guess the neck area can still be 'parallel'. It's just talk now. Anyway I picked up the .357 Herrett barrel and the pitting is not bad. I think it will shoot as is! Waiting for dies now.
