Fox Ridge, Same old Crap
« on: December 08, 2003, 04:21:49 PM »
Well just heard from my brother, he just got his 45 LC bbl back from FR. They were suppose to repair/replace it because the chamber was oversized and the extractor was so loose that it slipped over the rim when you chambered a round.  Well the only thing they seemed to fix was the extractor, the chamber is still ovesized.
Anyone know where a person can find SAMMI chamber spec's?

Your favorite Brownells catalog should have a go-no go guage for most popular calibers.

45 colt specs

This is from the www.sixgunner.com site

Rugers. like Colts are plagued with oversize chambers that have come from the black powder era and poor tolerance standards in modern industry. By taking a new Ruger in say a 44 magnum caliber: we rechamber it using our custom reamers to tight 45 Colt specs. Standard SAMMI specs for .45 Colt is .484 minimum to .489 maximum diameter. Our reamers cut a .480 chamber. Average 45 Colt case dimensions are .476 diameter. Our chamber is standard length. This conversion is approximately 86% as strong as a 44 magnum revolver so offers a 100% safety factor to the 32.000 psi level. With this new "tight" chamber and a special custom slow twist barrel fitted properly you can expect the following velocities with a 5 1/2" barrel and safe "full power" loads:

Thanks Steve;
They told him the spec was .486-.490 for the 45 LC. He has an old balloon head case and it only measures .479.
With all of the technology we have now days I'm curious as to when some of the industry's will be coming out of the dark ages. Apperently this is a case of not being able to think for themselves and just follow what's on the paper even if it's 100 years old. Don't investigate into making anything better, that might cost more or worse yet make happy customers.

Just get tired of paying for poor workmanship, and it's just not this place either!
(end of rant!)

With a tight chamber and a strong .45 Colt case (#1Federal, #2 Win., #3 Rem.) one should be able to drive bullets to almost the same velocity as a .454 Casull. *Talk to John Linebaugh about this.
   Anyway it's up to all of us shooters to let it be known to Fox Ridge or any other company like them that we are the reason why they are in business, and by boycotting them like we did Smith & Wesson we expect them to give us the value we pay for and not lame excuses! If they need to rechamber a new barrel for you... they need to get of their fat rear-ends and get moving...If any of you other shooters are having problems like this gent is...let it be known!
