Red Thunder
« on: March 10, 2010, 04:37:32 PM »
I just finished a sled for one of Dom's Coehorn Mortar's in soda pop can size.  The wood is mahogany unstained and varnished.  Usually I go with satin, but with the hardware it had to be gloss.  The sled is not scale, just what I thought would look good after viewing what was presented on the forum.  As to the hardware, everything except of course the barrel, elevation screw and the chain were hack sawed, filed and drilled out of flat brass stock.  Yeah, the nuts took some time.
Very happy with the barrel.  You can see on the left trunnion Dom's name and date of mfg.  The right side has the size of the bore.  NEAT!
The pictures were a little off color, but you get the idea.

I am not usualy a fan of the stuff but that is real nice .

Splendiferous! D-A; not having the machinery, I've got to work the metal the same way that you do, hacksaw, jewelers saw, files, and abrasives to polish, so I know the effort you put into fashioning the hardware. You also did an excellent job on that finely figured mahogany bed.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Ron,   That is a real fine mortar!  I love the detail it has, a very, very nice job!  Hey, I thought Mike and I were they only ones to make all of our own nuts, hand filing all those chamfers.  We both love Mahogany, both for the looks and the fact that it works like a dream.  That Dominic-made tube ain't too shabby either.  Together, the bed and tube combination is outstanding.

Excellent craftsmanship, Ron, congratulations,

Mike and Tracy

I don't mind taking flak about promoting hand tools........as shown in your sled.......makes the difference between ' workmanship '     and ' craftmanship '    in my very humble opinion.  excellent crafting Div.

Wow , what a piece of "Art Work " !

Love all the brass , Great workmanship.  Congradulations on a fine museum quality, presentation grade work of art !   8)

That Mahogany is the prettiest piece of that species I have ever seen .
I used to teach wood shop / cabinet making in another life , a life time ago .

We bought most all our hardwoods from Martinez's up in Stockton, Ca.
Never seen any thing that beautiful grained ever come through the shop.

We used quite a bit of Mahogany as it was the "cheap" hardwood .
Gum wood when finished properly would resemble Walnut @ half the cost.
Gum wood was refered to as the poor mans Walnut in those days.
We saved all the hard knots from the run of the mill walnut for a custom gun stock maker . He made beautiful  pistol grip caps for rifle stocks from it .
Left Handed people are in their right mind .

You made the chain by hand?  My heart goes out to you.  Nice work!  You should be proud.  You get out of it what you put into it.

Made the chain by hand! C'mon Zulu, next thing you'll be asking is if Div Arty grew the mahogany from a seedling.:D

Wow! awoke this morning and the sun was out and the power was turned back on, PG&E lost a transformer down in the valley, so off line for a while.  AND I WON A KEWPIE.  Many thanks for the kind words.
Smokemjoe asked for the mfg.  It is Dom Carpenter he is a sponsor and is listed in the stickies.
Southpaw, Martinez is not far from where I grew up.  Oakland.
Lostintex, you asked how long.  What's time when you are having fun.  You can ask Mike and Tracy I knew they would pick up on the bevels.  60 strokes with the mill file on each side of the nuts.  If you count they come out even.
Thanks Boom J for straightening Zulu out on the chain.  You have a way with words.  And yes I'm old enough to have planted those seed.

Much evaluation of this project before I decided it met my criteria for the Kewpie award.

I was disappointed, given where you live, that "red" turned out to be mahogany. I had expectations for a different red.

This pattern doesn't particularly appeal to me as the carriage replicated was not wood it was iron.  That said, just about everyone who makes this pattern out of wood does such a wonderful job,  you have to ask what's not to like.  Add in the handmade hardware and a Kewpie is a given.   Beautiful work!!!
