update/review of the leg holster i just got
« on: March 22, 2010, 10:41:23 AM »
well i got  the Firepower Tactical Leg Holster from sportsmanguide.com and i been useing for some starling hunting.  my rig is a m16 mag pouch on my left side and a old military surplus belt that is 1 3/4" wide. Well i used my HK usp co2 airgun which is a copy of the USP.  the Weight is  2.18 lbs loaded  and the real thing weight with magazine unloaded 1.69 lb so this is very close to the real deal.  I used this gun in a sand pit around here and you can't run with the gun in there. The gun makes the holster move a lot when running but when walking your ok.   Also the sights have a hard time clearing the holster and reholstering took a little more time. The lage safety catch on the side was why it could not be just go in.  I could not just drop it in and had to push it a little.  This holster seems to to be made for duty guns like 1911s, sigs or something with rounded sights.  I tryed it with my dasiy 1200 with is a copy of a browning medalist. the 1200 is  1.9 lbs in weight and has a longer barrel on it.  This gun worked very well in it, there was no movement and clearing was easy with it. I also have a airsoft glock 17 and it works well in there.

So this holster is a duty holster  and maybe it would work with a ruger  markIII Standard or a 22LR.   I am keep it and useing for when i walk the woods. if i was hunting with a real gun i would use my UTG /Leapers UTG Deluxe Universal Horizontal Shoulder Holster it fit all handguns and revolvers and it the best holster i have found for me so far.

it does point straight back and will flashs if someone is in back of you  but i hunt alone and the steel tabs on there so the hammer can not come down(tryed it with a Taurus Model PT1911) so it's safe to carry cock and locked. i made a review about it  http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,193614.0.html

I am not going to buy anymore leg holsters. I staying with Shoulder Holsters, western style holsters and anything that rides low.

Leg holsters were designed for people that have to carry a lot of gear and the upper thigh was a good spot for a relitively light peice of equipment such as Para troopers that have a primary weapon or two.
Other than that it just looks cool but is not as fast or practicle as a standard Hi ride hip holster.
The long reach to get to the thigh makes it slow.
Being on your leg it snags when walking through brush.
Walking through brush gets leaves, twigs, and other crap into the holster and your gun.
Being on your leg it adds weight to one leg and throws off your gate and sucks the energy out of you on long hikes.
Thigh holster traps the gun when in a car.
When I was shooting the tactical shoots at my last club we had a few fugitive recovery guys from the LA sherrifs Department.
These guys were high speed low drag kind of guys and wore the thigh holsters.  They all got their butts handed to them in the shoots.
Where it was noticable was on the walk and draw. ( two people start out side by side and the range master will say Walk.  After a few paces the command "Draw" Halts the two and they draw and shoot at two poppers and then go to the dueling tree.
The leg holster guys were aboout a second or two behind everyone else.  When I left a year and a half ago non of the LA county or police were wearing the low slung holsters.

very nice ;D i have very long arms so for me it easy to draw for leg, Shoulder Holsters and western style holsters . I have try belt but i am very slow with them. With my cheap Horizontal Shoulder Holster the best draw i got was about 1.5 secs but most time it 2-5 secs with my back-pack or jacket on.  that darw and get off a shot.

I have never seen cops with Shoulder Holsters anymore. I work  at publixs super market and lots of cops come in there and i aways look at there rigs. The bomb guy wears a 1911 in a leg holster and many of the special cops wear them, so that why i was thinking it must be a good rig.

If it works for you great.
And again the Fugitive recover guys were, repeat were wearing the thigh holsters till they started using then in timed events.
They do look cool and if you can intimadate the bad guys OK.
We do not allow shoulder rigs for the shoots as the crowd is behind the shooters and having people pulling guns with them aimed at the crowd is a Bad thing waiting for an accident to happen.
I guess there are arguments for wearing either when wearing a framed back pack as the padded belt does not work well with either a cross draw or strong side holster.
Mostly when hunting now I stopped carring a hand gun and figure if the rifle does not get it a short rifle will not either.
