$99.99 410 Pardner at Dick's - update - bought it
« on: March 07, 2010, 11:29:10 AM »
A Return -  scratch on the stock that the guy at the counter had to look for twice to show me where it was at.  Marked $20 off because they didn't want the hassle of sending it back.  Is this a good deal, or should I wait for a better deal?  I looked at a 12 ga as well (normal $119).  The 12 and the 410, the bluing seemed uneven on both - is this common? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Sounds like a good find to me. I looked at a 410 in the pawn shop $89. If they are marking down the 12 I would think about buying it as well.

Blueing on most of the H&R NEF gun's are on the weak side.

Think I will be going by our Dicks tomorro ;)

If you want a .410 bore specifically than it is probably a good find.  If you are indifferent on .410 or 12 gauge that go with the 12 gauge, you will make up that $20.00 real quick in the cost and selection of shells.

The 12 ga was regular price.  My initial plan was to buy a 12 ga and look for a 410 barrel, but doing it in reverse might cost less in the long run? (410 for $99 and look for a barrel on the classifieds).  Just things to think about I guess.  I have never bought a new gun - always gone the used route.  Not complaining because I have some nice guns, just always on the cheap or looking for great deals.

I was about to point out the same thing but you beat me to it.

They're willing to knock off $20 for a scratched stock?  Man, I wish we had Dicks in Arkansas!  Our local sporting goods "chain" would probably mark it up $20 and claim that it's a limited edition.

regards,
Jeff

Provided you already have a larger bore, the .410 is a fun gun to own.  On its own though, I feel it lacks versatility that both 20 and 12 ga shotguns have, I/E its uses are limited by comparison.

Okay, I bought the 410. Out the door w/ Tax for $105.  Because the barrel looked like the bluing was darker in some areas and lighter in others, they threw in a cold bluing kit for free.  Later on this year I'll pick up a 12 ga smooth bore barrel to go with it.  I see them go at a decent price from time to time here on graybeard.  My son and I will have some fun plinking w/ it this spring/summer.  I already have a handi in 270, and have an additional 20 ga rifled slug barrel to go with that one - Addicting, my wife is shaking her head.  At least its a cheap habit.  The only problem is that when you add up the cost for our land that we are buying up north for hunting, and keeping a cheap yamaha bike on the road it all adds up . . .

You probably know this, but I'd be careful with the cold blue. It's OK for minor touch-up. The only cold blues I've found that work for larger areas are Brownell's Oxpho blue and Dicropan T-4. And even those work best with extensive degreasing and complete removal of the original blue, as blending can be an issue. In any case, no cold blue will give you as seamless a finish as hot bluing.

it would be very minor, will not be used more than likely.  I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't have any issues w/ the metal in the areas where the bluing is thinner.  i have an older cva bobcat that could use a touch up that I plan on using it on.  Just excited by the deal - and wasn't expecting them to throw the bluing in on top of it too.
