My first handgun was a Ruger Super Redhawk in 480.
Guess I had to be different...

Start with a .22 and practice. Practice. Practice.  Hunt Rabbit, Squirrel ect. and when you feel real comfortable, then move to .357, but start it with .38 Specials. Practice... You get the idea.
When you progress upward it will be easier to move to larger calibers with more velocity.

Buy a Reloading kit and a couple of Reloading books, and start reloading.  If a survey was conducted on all the folks on this Forum, you would find a very high percentage of Reloader's.

I would have to agree with others who recommend a good .22 revolver as a starter. Small game seasons are much longer making a chance for success more possible. Ammo is much cheaper(every handgun hunter I know uses his .22 when nothing else can be afforded). Besides a good .22 will last into your great grand childrens realm of hunting? If you aquire a quality .22 bet you keep it forever? As others have said learning fundamentals is much easier with smaller caliber handguns.

If you can only afford one pistol I recommend that you buy a 357 in a 4 or 6 inch barrel double action revolver. To start buy a Lee reloader for 38spl/357mag and get your 38 special brass, small pistol primers, 140-158 grain cast bullets, and Unique or Trail Boss powder. Load in the 700 fps range and recoil is minimal. Then step into 357 mag brass with small pistol magnum primers and shoot the 158 grain cast. Then go into the Hornady FTX at your chosen weight and steadily ramp up the speed with practice until you get a comfortable hunting load.

(I still stick to my first recommendation of a single six Ruger for the first one)

Carrying a pistol for many years, my first encore was used in 223 w/brake, Learned the hard way Never shoot a braked gun w/o hearing protection hunting. Ears rang for a week. Well I have graduated to 15 different Encores and contender as well as several more barrel all scope at 73 can no longer see irons. I agree with most if you have never shot many handguns it is wise to start off with a 22 especially a childs first experience with a pistol. Don't want them flinching right off the bad, and especially important hearing protection. Lou

Like so many others here I went the .22 > .38/.357 > .44 mag route. Then I later discovered the .41 mag and even down to the .44 Special, however, my favorite still has to be the .44 mag. But lordy, I'm glad I didn't start there! And I'm also glad that ammo prices weren't as high as they are now. That's why God gave us .22s. They're great to learn on, and you never out grow them. My first was a Smith & Wesson semiautomatic (2206) and the next four were all revolvers, Smiths and Rugers. It was great when a brick was only $10, but now you're lucky to get one for $25. Still, that's the price of only one box of centerfire cartridges today. So if you start off with a good .22 (don't buy no junk) you'll have a great gun for plinking; a great gun for teaching the wife and rug rats how to shoot later; and a great gun for hunting small game. It's also a great excuse for saying later, "Honey, I need to get a new gun for huntin' deer. The .22 is just too small for that!" Then get that .44 to go with that fine little carbine.

Then later . . . "Honey, that .44 is just too big for home defense. I think I'm gonna get a . . . "
