just dropped a cridder
« on: March 11, 2010, 06:57:54 AM »
I have been working on loads for my .223 and man this thing is fun to shoot.
just got some bullets in some 40 vmax and 50 silver tips. I loaded some up of both. I have shot the 50 before because I had some left over fromm 22-250. So I know the 50s shoot good. 3/4 groups. Anyway I heard a crow out side and saw him when and got the handi 2 mins. later pow dead bird. He was about 100 yrds. give or take. Now I just have to get a yote to do the same. Ow buy the why this is a 1-12 twist and Tried some 60s I had and I got just under a 1 inch group at 100yards is this common just woundering.

My favorite Handi in .223 is a 1 in 12" and it puts three 55 grain bullets all under a dime at 100 yards any time I do my part. I tried some 70 grainers one time and they tumbled and keyholed badly. I have never tried any 60 or 62's, I have been happy with the 55's....<><....:)

I don't know Andy's load... But I have yet to own a 223 that doesn't shoot a near max load of H322 powder sparked with a match primer and topped with a 52/53Gr match bullet into 1" or less groups.

My 1in12 loves them!!  ;D

;D Just got done shooting. I worked with 60s a little more. Mind you this is just a 3 shot group at a 100 yrds I could cover them with a dime! I was using 7 1/2rem. bench rest primers, 27.5 grs of H 380 and 60gr sierra vammintor. Not sure on speed I think my cron. is off because yesterday it read 3240 fps so I try a factory load 50 gram and it read 3490 fps and it should be 3140 fps thats 350 different. That would make the 60s 2890 fps which then could be right. I seated the bullet to were its just past the neck and it still not touching the landings.

I've had really good results with the Hornaday 50gr SX & H335.  ;)

I got to thinking about how everyone got such good results with the Winchester factory ammo, back when it was availiable.  so I looked for a load that would duplicate it.  In the Hodgen manual they list a load using Winchester Brass, Winchester WSR Primers, Winchester 748 Powder, and listing several different bullet weights.  The only listing without a starting and max load, per bullet weight.  I found they shoot extremely well in both my Handi's and my Contenders as well.  Right off the top of my head I can not remember the powder charge weight, but if I can find it later today I will post it.  Rog

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
