Just got one of these today for a pretty good trade, got about $425 in it.  I have 3 38-55's and a Marlin 375 so am set up for this caliber.  Does anyone have one of these and know what size bullet would work best for the Ruger?  I have .375 jacketed, .377,.379 and .380 sized bullets to try.  Thanks and Happy New Year to all the GBO family.  DP

I think the 375 is... um... 375?   (plus .0010 or minus .0020)  ;D  The bores should be pretty standard there DP, unlike our 38-55's!   :D

My bore is .375" and I use the Hornady 225gr Interlock. The last 3 shot group I shot was at 250 yrds and measured 1-3/4". The 200gr Winchester Factory load is also super accurate. My Ruger #3 has #1 wood on it and a modified leaver. Shot two deer with it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Fred.  How much had to be done to change the wood over to the #1 style?  Could you post a pic on the mod done on your lever, not sure how that is going to treat ones knuckle when a shot is touched off.  I know nothing about these sweet little rifles, but gonna try to learn.  Not much found yet on em, must not have made to many of them.  DP

     I have one, bought it in '81 I believe. I used it exclusivly with 220 Hornady's for deer and Bear. Worked to perfection, and very accurate. Last year I purchaced a bullet mold from LBT to make it a cast bullet shooter. I would slug your bore to find out what it REALLY is, as mine isn't even close to the now standard saying of, .375 WCF is .375 and 38/55 is anywhere from .378 to .380. My eyes were sure opened. Also in doing a chamber slug I found that I can use 38/55 brass, which I do, as the chamber will accommodate the length. And, because the extra length covers all my bullets grease grooves. I also have a .375 Win 94 Big bore that slugs .379, so you see things are not always as they seem.
   In looking into William Ruger and the way he did things, I often wonder if he didn't have the foresite to see that there would be some fellow out there who maybe just might, try and shoot a 38/55 in .375 Win chamber?

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but here's a photo of my #3 22 Hornet's non-stock wood and lever.  It was done by a hobbyist in northeastern Ohio sometime before I pruchased in in 1984.  It's the one in the foreground of the four singles shown.  Spiffy looking little rifle.

DPE-ahoy
 
The #1 wood fits to the #3 frame. Clean the face of the fore arm and tthe butt with acetone to remove any oil then apply a thin coat of steel bed. Apply release agent to the frame and in stall
the stock with light scew pressure. When steel bed is set up remove the stock and clean up.

The welding should be done by some person who knows TIG welding. The piece you cut off is reshaped and welded back on as shown.

This is a suberb little woods rifle, with plenty of power to spare with big .375 bullets for anything we have in this country.

Thanks Fred.  I like the looks and feel of the pistol grip stocks, my darn wrist doesn't want to bend like it usta :(.  Now to search the country for some Number 1 wood.  No hurry, this will be my project that may take awhile.  :-\  DP

I know the No1 wood attaches,
Would simply changing the lever to a No 1 fix all of your problems?

Here's a couple of pics of my #3's with #1 wood with unmodified #3 levers.  One has Ruger #1 wood and the other has inexpensive Reinhart-Fagen wood. I grasp the rear part of the lever with my fingers instead of the stock. They are varmint rifles shot off a bench not hunting rifles. I can see that grasping the stock might be an advantage on a hunting rifle.


This pic from about ten years age shows the #3 in front with the original .22 Hornet barrel. It had been rechambered to K-Hornet and the front sight removed.
