Lets talk 375 Ruger
« on: February 18, 2010, 11:16:42 AM »
I know I'm a year or two late here but man I just dont see much being said or talked about on this cartridge. I've read the stuff I can google but I would like to hear from some of you guys on your thoughts, personal info.,hunts, bullet damage,etc...pictures maybe?
I just picked up a NIB ruger Alaskan in 375(blk model) for $675.00 out the door. felt like it was a good deal and couldnt pass it up. My friend let me use his 358STA last year an that was all it took. I dont really care much for fireforming. So the 375 ruger just appealed to me. I plan on running 270g barnes TSX as I have had really good luck with them in my 257 wby.
So lets talk...tell me what you think, what ya know....and so on. not looking for something I can google up...

I don't own one personaly but  friend of mine does. he's never killed anything with it except paper. I think that is liekly the cse for most people shooting that class of weapon, not that many lions runnin around where I live.

if you need a 375 class gun, the 375 ruger is  modern version of the classic. It is a ballisic twin, ammo is cheaper, and rifles are cheaper and handier in general do to the shorter case. I almost bought one becasue they are so cheap, but can't justify it when I have other guns I want first.

I think you may have trouble duplicating the Hornady ballistics with handloads because they have been running some of the newer loading methods on these newer calibers (IE blended powders). I think you will easily be able to duplicate the 375 H&H ballistics because case capacity is nearly identical. TSX is as good a bullet as any, little pricey though.

Check our realguns.com, he has run extensive evaluation on this caliber.

I think this gun will stick becasue it makes sense and it is not just ballistic hype.

My brother and i both have the older bright SS version, we used them in sept. 2007 on a alaskan bear hunt. let's just say the factory 270gr hornady ammo will put a 400 pound black bear down without a step taken. Sense then I have had some 300 gr. accubond's loaded and it will shoot a 1" hole all day long. I have used the gun for many applications armadillo, 2 coyotes, 1 doe (that was bad). the gun will shoot 4" groups at 400 yards. One of the coyotees was 280 yards. You have bought your self one great rifle. bgbfarm

Now thats what I'm looking to hear....As the name applies there will probley be more eastern washington state coyotes killed with this then anything but I will also use it for Elk,Moose,Bear(mostly black),Whitetail,Mule and blacktail deer. And Maybe a Tenn. pig or 3!
The only big bores rifles I have ever owned was a 45-70 an 444 marlin. So I can't wait to get this one up and running. The 257 Wby that I have slinging 100THX's is as cool as the other side of the pillow but there is just something abouit a big bore rifle that I'm going to have to run through my system. What I have in mind for the scope is the Leupold FX3 6x42 with the LR duplex...I feel like I will have everything covered from here on out with these 2

I'm in Puyallup(westside by Tacoma) but have the best coyote hunting spot I've ever seen or heard about. I hunt dogs over by spokane. Its nothing for me to take 3-5 dogs in a morning. problem Is I dont get over to the spot no where near as much as I like.
I agree I think the 375 Ruger will be the ticket.

I can honestly say that I don't know much about the 375 but every African hunt you read about someone is using a 375 from plains game to buffalo. It seems to be a very impressive caliber, I want one.

:D Coyote I too have a 375 but it is the H & H....I don't shoot it a bunch and have only killed antelope in the U. S. with it and one water buck..it is a killer...while the Ruger is certainly a fine caliber, my only thought would be with the limited use we have for this caliber, would it last? since the H & H has such a head start...with enough brass for the handloader it will not matter...I always plan to use my 375 each fall,  but something always gets in my hands first...I have thought of it on elk, but with the chances for a really long shot at a big bull, usually I pack a .300 or 340..but it is a nice caliber either one the H * H or Ruger...I am keeping mine for a few more years just incase I get another shot at Africa....have fun...different cali bers is what keeps me interested in hunting...I would have only used my .30-06 I would have probably quit hunting 20 years ago.....

Don't own one but have shot one.  And want one.

No need but would be ready in case I ever get to Alaska or Africa, both of which are only slightly more likely than winning the lottery.

Guess I could use one for elk...

I have an Afrikan with a 1.8-5.5 Ziess conqest on Warne QD rings. Dropped a 740# dressed Moose in his tracks at 7m with a head shot with 260gr Accubond at 2700fps. H4350, WLRM primer. Shoots cloverleaf groups at 100, thought I was missing target at first.

Went with Accubond because it beats up factory loads and Horrnady 270 protected points in magazine.

Wish Lee made collet die in this caliber, and a 260 gr GC mold.

I been thinking about maybe trying the AB's but have had really good luck with the TSX's so thats probley what I will shoot. do the 260 AB's have a crimping grove?
as far as scopes go I think I'm going with the 6x42 Leupold and the LR duplex...any thought on this scope?..eye relief going to be enough, etc??

Accubond has cannelure (marketing idiots call it something else) to crimp in. Hornady's data calls out wrong OAL, seat to cannelure. I'm having moose steak for dinner, and frozen peas, who got my vote. Don't need lead free, low density bullets because I don't live in PRCa.
Just fun, no illigitimi carburundum.
