Sizing Hornady .416 gas checks to .410.
« on: November 19, 2003, 04:27:19 PM »
Has anyone tried using .416 Hornady gas checks with .41 Magnum or .40 cal rifle bullets sized to .410.  I have seen the Hornady .45 gas checks used for both .459 and .452 dia bullets and they worked well at both diameters.
Does anyone have a few .416 gas checks they they would sell for an experiment?
my email is ireload2@yahoo.com
Thanks,
 Ed

Not sure why they are called "416" or if there is a change in diameter but I have used Hornady .41 GCs for .410 sized bullets for some time.  Haven't bought any for several years though.  Anyone know if there has been a change?

I use the Hornady .416 gas checks sized to .410-.410 and they work very well with my Ballisiti-cast 250 WFN.  Lyman makes a 41 but once sized they fall off farely easy.  The Hornady are crimped on and stay in place.

Just mike both this is what I got.

Hornady
outside .422
inside   .392
Lyman
outside .416
inside   .396

there are two diffent sized shanks used on .41 bullets. My rcbs and ballistic cast molds use hornadys and my lymans have to use lyman gas checks. the hornadys are to small for the lyman shanks and the lyman gas checks fall off with the others.

Guys,
Thanks for the information on the gas checks. Lloyd sent me some of the Lyman's and they are a little loose after sizing. They do make for a  significant improvement in accuracy. If the Hornadys will work with my friends mold I will invest in a box of Hornadys. Otherwise I will go with Lymans .41 and see if annealing keeps them from springing back after sizing.
