G2 opened when fired.
« on: March 09, 2010, 12:32:47 AM »
I had a G2. Had a 30-30 barrel accurate no problems, had a 309 JDJ, same. 45cal muzzleloader, ditto. Problem was with .44mag. That thing would pop open upon firing. It did it so fast that the shell would fly out and bounce off my fore-head. I got rid of it after a few trips to the service center. Anyone else have this problem. I liked that set-up but had no confidence in it.

The problem was probably with the barrel. I once came across a 10" 30-30 barrel that some nut had ground the locking bolts down.  It would lock up enough to go off, but would tip open when you fired it.  I replaced the locking lugs and all was well.

There is an interlocking part in the frame that has to make contact with the barrel lugs. It is supposed to prevent the firing pin from hitting the primer if the barrel is not fully locked to the frame. Years ago, I removed this part because I was getting too many "no primer hits" with one particular barrel. Was not a good idea, I had too many rounds going off and opening the barrel causing the bullet to hit way low-also caused the primer to back out a little.

Funny thing was when I first got it the 30-30 barrel would not function, could not cock the hammer, sent it back. Fixed. but that .44 would come open on upper loads, not max, but upper hardcast loads.

I had a 223 barrel that was doing the same. I sent frame and barrel back to T.C. as they advised me to. They sent back my old barrel with new locking lugs and a spanking new frame. Everything has worked fine since. I love that T.C. service!

Old story, new post.  Do some searching in this thread and you will find volumes on how to resolve this problem.

My first Encore did that in a 30-06.  I got beaned between the eyes with a 30-06 case.  I thought the gun had blown up.  It certainly would have put my eye out had I not been wearing safety glasses.  I called TC and they replaced the barrel, no questions.

I actually held the pistol over over head and pulled the trigger to watch what was going on.  The gun fired, open, ejected the empty, and closed in a fraction of a second.  You had to really watch to see it.

Send it back to TC.
