Great load for the 45/70 BC
« on: March 12, 2010, 04:42:52 PM »
My day for Range Officer duty.. Worked the 50 yard. Loaded up some 300 grain lead flat point  bullets in front of 35 grains of 3031.. This is a Trapdoor load I found in the little Yellow book on the 45/70 printed by Guns & Ammo in 1973..  "Guns & Ammo Mini Manual" Get one if you can find it.. Found mine on E-Bay.. This is a very accurate load with little recoil..

You might also try any under 500gr. cast lead bullet over 13.0 gr. Unique for plinking and see what you think. It has worked well in quite a few. The Lee moulds in the 340 and 405 gr. weight are good choices.

Don't know about velocity.. Would say in the 1200 FPS range.. Went right through a 5" thick phone book at about 60 yards.

I like 3031 with lead pills in the 45-70 too.

28 grains of IMR 4198 with any old lead pill (Remember that heavier bullets = more muzzle velocity in the .45-70.  That's just opposite of most metallic cartridges.)

Also, saw in Handloader that Trail Boss ought to make up some lighter-than-full-velocity loads.  Good article.  Gotta try some.

I have recently loaded some 45-70 loads using 12grs of TB and a 330gr lead HP bullet. A load of fun!!!!!!!!

TB is the way to go, I really like it.

Thanks, Dinny

You'll like it. Skiforce shot mine this last weekend and was shocked at the light recoil and high fun factor. I have him hooked on a 45-70 Handi now.  ;D

Thanks, Dinny

Been experimenting with TB in a .444 with whatever plated .44 pistol bullets are laying around. Using a Lee scoop that throws 11.9-12.1 grains (2.8cc? maybe?) Pure plinking fun. Cheaper than 45-70 since I don't cast.  Easy on brass since I don't bell the case. Imagine it is a similar boom for the buck.

While not specifically for the BC..but any 45-70...this is something I would like to try for a plinking load..

Seems like it would be interesting.

Ive done a fair bit of this, in a number of calibers, but my method is a little different. He likes to 'bump' the ball up, and I prefer to use one a little oversize and size it down to have a 'shank' all around that fits firmly into a fully expanded, fire-formed case neck. BTW, this is basically what happens when you load the right sized ball into a cap & ball revolver.
His recommendation of a light load to drive them is valid, however, I dont find them troublesome to make but really easy. Decap/recap, throw the charge, thumb press in the prepped ball flush and smear some softish lube over the mouth. Good to go. Other than the mentioned change in POI they are quite accurate.
