I have seen traditional center fire rifles do the same thing, from improper loads.

Or barrel obstruction.

There is one powder that is suggested for the savage i think . To stray from it or over load it could do what is shown in the picture for sure . That could also happen with bp if it was a over load and the bullet was not fully seated .
