OK, picked up a ss .45/70 14" w/MB....CUT IT OFF~!
« on: March 20, 2010, 03:47:06 AM »
I do not like the increased muzzle blast of 'brakes'. I've always taken the increased [regular] recoil and preferred saving my hearing [always wear ear protection].
I'm going to [or considering : )] sticking this barrel in the lathe and cutting the MB off which will leave 12.5" of barrrel. I will start with mild loads using a paper patched 250 gr Speer SWC bullet as I did with my rifle 45/70s and .458 WinMags and .458x2 American. GREAT plinking/varmint load with mild recoil.
I'm hoping this Contender bore will 'like' this bullet, too. Anyway the MB will most likely be cut off.
Anyone have thoughts about this? Done this?
I would rather have found a standard [no brake] 14" barrel but a deal came with this one.

Thanks for 'fixin' my post and not junking it! : )

Yep, I'd whack it off Alan, go out on the back porch and throw it as far away as I could.   The 45-70 is a pusssy cat and doesn't need one, but then, I hate MB's on anything.   ;)
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I have a 14" without the MB.  The only reason I have a 45-70 is because I finally found one without the MB.  Recoil is not that bad to me using trap door loads.

Cut it!

I say cut it.  I'll take a little recoil over that awful blast in the face!  My brother has a 14" with muzzle tamer, it's really unpleasant to shoot, but my 8" 45-70 is much more managable.  The blast from the 14" is so distracting, it's hard to shoot any sort of group, yet my 8 incher shoots nice tight groups all day long.  Between me, my brother, and anyone else that has given it a try, we probably put 200 rounds down the pipe in the first 2 days that I got it!  The 14" hasn't been fired that much in the year and a half that he's owned it!

I dislike ANY muzzle brake. I've been around even mild rounds in long rifle barrels, such as the .308 Win and it becomes a MONSTER when a brake is used. Even the VAIS [sp?] break which is supposed to direct blast forward DOES NOT in my experience!
I would like to find someone with a 14" blue WITH SIGHTS barrel and NO MT and hope they wanted mine. I'm probably headed for the lathe later today even though I've not shot this 45/70 barrel yet. Muzzle blast directed anywhere but FORWARD is not for me, even w/ear protection which I always wear.
I figure it will only be a matter of HOURS after cutting my barrel's MT off that someone will pm me and say 'still got that barrel, I'd like to trade"..... :-X
But if YOU can handle an EIGHT INCH BARREL, geez, surely I can make do with a 12.5"~!!

Oh well 'Have Lathe, Will Travel".....12 1/2 incher, here we come!

Groo here
That depends on what loads you will use...
If standard factory , no break is needed,,, BUT ,,, if you are looking at SSK type loads,500gr jsp at 1300+
you might have another think coming.
I have an SSK 45-70 that is magna-ported [4 port] and they help with heavy bullets..

I'm most likely going to use 250 and 300 grainers, maybe a 405.
I cut the MT off. I'm going to mount it in a lathe and clean up the muzzle face......and get it out and shoot it!
