what would you use?
« on: March 17, 2010, 07:26:41 PM »
I was wondering what you experts  would use in my situation , the gun club I joined do different shooting events and one that has caught my eye is a varmint match, it's shooting at paper groundhog targets at 200 yards I have two handi rifles I could use a 243 with a fixed 14 power scope and a Ruger 204 with a 6-18 power scope. both 22 inch standard barrels. I don't have any bench time on either yet but plan to fix that tomorrow. looking for opinions as too best way to go. I reload for the 243 but haven't started on the Ruger 204 yet... I'll appreciate all the help I can get...... thanks......... Larry

I think I would use the .243 since you are already set up to reload for it. 14x is plenty of scope for 200 yards and at that distance the flatter trajectory of the .204 doesn't make any differance. The .243 can buck the wind a little better too, but again at 200 yards I don't know if there is enough differance between the two to matter. I guess for me already having the reloading supplies on hand for the .243 just makes it the winner, unless you are looking for a good excuse to buy some more reoaling gear.

Both should do 200 easy. get some dies for the 204! ;)
Then bring both to the range. Use the 204 on calm days and the 243 on windy day's, an be sure to shoot them both equally, you don't want one getting jelous of the other :D
Serious, I'd bring both, when one starts getting hot, just shoot the other. It'll take range and bench time to find a sweet load but that's the fun. Membership at the local club is usualy cheaper than day passes if you can swing it.

How many rounds are in a match?

While .243 is a pussy cat in regards to recoil, if the number of rounds is high enough, the lower recoil of the .204 might come into play.

Of course, if you are shooting fast in a timed event, I imagine the lower intensity of the .243 might help in the barrel cooling department.

Go for the 204, it is a real varmint cal and the 243 is a known bad actor in the handi.  Larry

necchi: range is very nice, well run and only $40 per year , unlimited use. only bad thing it is 50 miles from home but I am retired so I can go any time plus my favorite aunt only lives 5 miles from there and I already visit her 3-4 times a month, planning to go tomorrow.

noyb72: match is only 20 rounds plus practice shots and you are allowed either 15 or 20 minutes to take your shots. I was reading about other matches and don't remember for sure what the time limit was. should be plenty of time to cool off a barrel.

trotterlg: I'm sorta leaning towards the 204, it's a new caliber for me and haven't gotten reloading dies yet, I plan to get a couple factory loads to see how it likes them plus I will need the brass  :) any good load recommendations?

;D it would surely do that , but I don't think they call a 45-70 a varmint rifle  ;D but it would handle a very large varmint 8)

I have a .204 and love it. You and I both need to get set up to reload for it. I would say right now use the .243 because you can practice more with it cheaper. But there is just something awe inspiring about pulling the trigger on that .204 and seeing the bullet hole appear in the target before the gun can recoil!
I have been shooting Winchester 32 gr. Luballoy's in mine. Not because they are the most accurate but because I was given them for free! I can't complain about accuracy, every varmint that has stepped in front of it has vaporized.
