223AI bbl length??
« on: March 23, 2010, 02:20:05 AM »
What bbl length for the 223AI for the Encore?
What twist rate?
I have talked to Shelsie at MGM and they have a 8 wk lead time.
MGM can mill the scope base to 20MOA.
Full bull or tapered bbl?

For a handgun barrel, I'd go 10 inches and for a rifle 24 inches.

I'd want a twist no slower than 1:10 and 1:8 would be better and the barrel would be tapered.

I'd go for an untapered  1:8 in either 24 or 26 inches. I've had 2 Contender barrels in the standard .223 in that format, and both shot everything from the stubby 40 grainers to the streamlined 75 grain A-Max with surgical accuracy.

The 75 grain A-Max really adds a good bit of thump to the round compared to the conventional 50-55 grain bullets. It is visibly more authoritative on coyotes, especially when you get past the 150-175 yard mark.

I could kick myself for ever getting rid of either of those, but I guess we all suffer from 20-20 hindsight now and then...

Thanks for the help.
This will be a rifle bbl in SS.
I want to shoot the 75grn bullets.
I thought the Encore in 223AI would be great for coyotes.
With the 223AI you use very little powder, almost no recoil, cheap to shoot= more practice.
