.357 and .44 grouping 6 inches at 50 yards????
« on: March 17, 2010, 06:32:29 AM »
This past winter I did some sighting in with the .44, .45 and .357s.  I put targets in front of snow banks and drifts at 50 yards.  Well, the snow's all gone, and I was walking through there yesterday and glanced down at the bare ground.  There was a bullet.  I looked around some more and found 5 bullets within a 6 inch circle.  three .44s and two .357s.  All but one .357 were unmarked except for rifleing marks.  The snow had melted and left them high and dry.  I would guess they went about ten feet through the fairly hard snow beyond the target.

Just thought it interesting.

What is the corrolation coefficient between ballistic geletin and packed snow?  NOTHING!  It is undefined!    What does this information tell us?  NOTHING again!   Two for two.  They are dissimilar materials and exclusive in their properties!  Should any corrolation consider the effect of heat and melting of the ice or geletin?  WHO KNOWS?  WHO CARES?  My meds are too high today!

It is quite remarkable and coincidental that all six were in close proximity.

That's the only point I was trying to make.

Ive been 'recovering' my bullets that way for some years. Other than the delayed time frame, I often find the engraving, etc. of interest as I'm always checking for base band erosion and such. An imperfect medium, to be sure, but the hunt is kind of like that for Morrel mushrooms, find one and there are likely more.

All good searches.....morrel mushrooms, shed antlers and spent bullets.  The sheds and bullets are here now, and with this mild weather, the shrooms may not be far behind.  We picked up a nice half an eight point shed the other day under an apple tree top of the hill behind the barn.

I know Pete.  I was just spicing it up.  Or so I thought.  Tim got it.

Years ago I shot some 270 cal. 130 gr Rem bronze points and some 22 long rifles into a snowbank. When the snow melted the 22s looked like Pete said, but the bronze points were completely shattered. That's when I quit shooting bronze points, and am now very suspicious of bullets with plastic in the nose.

DP, haven't got it yet.  Might be here today.  I'll give ya a shout when it shows up.  I'll put her red dot on and have her shooting in minutes when it arrives.
