625
« on: March 26, 2010, 05:44:26 AM »
I am still searching for the right gun.  I found a model 625 on line for 825.00 (Cdn). (The same price as the new 686 with 6"brl). Are these good guns? It apparently was designed for IPSC shooting, so would it be a better target gun than the 686?  What would this gun be like compared to the 686?  From my internet research, it appears that it is a large (N) frame, but with the smaller (K) frame type grip.  The article stated that the recoil is mild.  Would it be similar to the 686 when shooting .357mag? What about availability of holsters etc?
Thanks,
Swamp

I think $825.00 is a bit pricey for the 625. I do like the 625 in 4 inch and it is a very versatile revolver - lot of fun to shoot - especially if you reload.

They made the 625 in both 45 colt, and 45acp.  You may want to confirm which it is. Both are relatively mild.  Both are very enjoyable to shoot.  The 45acp uses moon clips to hold the rimless cartridges in the chambers.  Both would have less recoil than the 357 mag unless the 45colt was handloaded to higher pressures.  Not sure what $825 CDN converts to in US dollars these days, but most 625s I have seen are in the $700-$750 US range new.

Not sure what your intended purpose is, but the model 625 is a great gun in either caliber (45acp or 45Colt) this is mine in 45acp.

While my 686 is a snubbie it is still accurate for it's barrel length.

Grip size and reach to trigger are almost the same on these 2 guns.

They must be very popular.  I contacted the dealer just hours after it came up and it was sold.
Still looking!
Thanks again for the input.

I have two 625's (a 5" 625-6 Model of 1989 and a 4" 625-8 Jerry Miculek Special). I mounted Red Dots on both. They are BOTH absolutely "user friendly". I shoot them more consistently good than ALL other revolvers I own (and that's a bunch). I am a "Certified Old Fart" and my best target last fall was a 97x100 on the NRA Slow Fire Target. I am not the world's best pistol shooter but average in the low nineties slow fire.

I cast my own bullets and reload, so I get to shoot a LOT. Here is my 5" 625-6:

I recently picked up the M25-2 45 ACP. Can't wait to get it out to shoot.

swamphunter,

I picked up a used 625-8 (.45 ACP) a couple of years ago from a fellow on CGN who decided he really wanted a Performance Center model instead and I love it. I think I paid about $800 CDN, so the one you saw listed may not have been all far out of line, at least for this side of the border.  The odd one has come up on CGN since at about the same price, but they seem to be pretty few and far between. If I had the choice I might prefer one in .45 Colt "just because"; I suppose I could have it converted but it's probably not worth the cost and hassle.

Dale53- I saw some of your cast bullets on the S&W forum (?). I was especially impressed with the hollow-points from MP Molds in Germany.

The 45acp version will also shoot 45auto rim without clips. You must reload for auto rim as they are not available as ammo, but the brass is available. They can be loaded with the same specs as the 45acp. Great for plinking, or blasting.

I am a real fan of the .45 ACP version of the 625. I mostly shoot target loads so that is where my priority lies. However, for SERIOUS work (Self defense or hunting) there are load choices in the .45 ACP or .45 Auto Rim cases that will get the job done:

These are Mihec 200 gr Cast Hollow Points driven at 1000 fps (no doubt the ones that Josquin mentions)

These are NOE Cast 454424 250 gr bullets driven at 900+ fps. Casting my own not only gives great versatility to this caliber but costs VERY little:
