7mm Mauser gift?
« on: April 03, 2010, 05:23:29 AM »
Hello all it has been a long time since I posted here. I have recently recieved a 7mm mauser from inheratence. I can not find the manufacturer any where. I would like to know the gun that I now own. I would ask the person who gave it to me if they did not pass. I am wondering if any of you can help me identify this rifle(which still shoots great). All and any help will be greatly appreciated. (the guys at gander mountian have no clue......figures)

Looks to me like a sporterized military barreled action.  Bolt handle is turned down not replaced.  Nice wood BTW; 50's - 60's style, Bishop?  Buhler safety.  issue barrel I'd bet, if so then that's the original caliber (7x57).  Looks like a small ring but I can't really tell for sure from the pics.  That gas escape port has some significance but I can't remember what it is.  Issue bottom metal and trigger, no locking screw which also makes me think it's a small ring '93 or '95 type...

Have you pulled the scope mounts to see if there is anything on the top of the ring?  Some country's crest, that type of thing?   ???

I love guessing games!   ;D

there are no crests that I can find. there is a design that looks similar to a wreath on the bottom of the grip. Its all black hard to get a clear picture.

When I pull off the mount there is no crest or emblem. this is the clearest picture of the bottom of the grip I can get with this camera. It probably will not help much.

The hard plastic grip cap (with one phillips head screw in the center) fits with a old Bishop/Fagin after market stock.  That's about all I can do without getting the rifle in my hands.   ;D  I suprised noone else has jumped in here.   :-\

It's a sporterized mil surp for sure, With the step barrel a dead giveaway, I'd say the crest were ground off because it looks like the stripper clip guide has been ground off also. Gonna be kinda hard to ID without the crest unless it still has some proof marks on it someplace. 8)

Nothing under the stock???  I mean did you take the action out of ther stock and see if there are any markings??  Also, I'd move this post to the mauser forum.

Wow I looked for a mauser forum, this thread probably should be there sorry. But as for taking the gun apart there are no crests. I took it to a family member today and they said its probably a mauser 98. Thanks for all the help. Regardless of the manufacturer I now know more about my new gun. Was never going to get rid of it due to sentamental value.

Does the bolt cock on opening or closing?

I would bet its a Mauser 95.

I doubt very seriously that it is a 98.  If you can get a good side view shot you can tell at a glance.

Yes please.   ;D  Full side view (90o) with bolt in.

Also, cock on closing is a dead giveaway but it could have been modified.  One of mine has been.

Strange there is no writing on the outside of the left side rail, but there is a serial number.

It appears to be a Spanish Model 95. See the gas port on the left side? That's a pretty good clue as to a Spanish mauser, as is the serial number on the receiver right there. Also from what I can see in the photo the letter code of the serial number. Also notice the long and thinner cocking piece. Caliber 7mm is a pretty good indication as well.

Looks like it's a nice rifle regardless of origin.

I like the rifle, it seems well made.  I was wondering about that left side gas port, it was throwing me off.  Is it normal on Spanish made 95's?

Is front bottom of the bolt Flat or round?  Could be a 93 Spanish Mauser if Flat.  Doubt it is a 95.

Not all mauser 93's with the squared bottom bolt are Spanish  ;) the Boers had a fair few of them. Sorry but i don't have a photo of the bolt face :-[ must have deleted it.

From the Pictures as Everyone has pointed out it is a military rifle that has been sporterized.
From the looks I would say a 95.  the vent in the reciever is what i am going by.
Since it is a sporter... It could be mixed and matched to make it what the customer wanted.
I would say it was a rifle (full lenght) that has been cut down from the 29" barrel.  The lack of a front sight bump on the muzzle makes me think it was cut.
The only way to know who it was made for is to look at the crest, that is under the front scope mounts.
There are other clues as to who made it in the proof marks.
If it is Spanish, Mexican, South African, or one of the many other countries that used the 7X57.  It is a well made rifle and looks like the sporterizing was done well.
The wreath around the crest makes me think Spain.
I would not dismount the scope to find out unless you had plans to change the scope.
